About the Book

English summary: The articles in this collection are derived from a conference held in October, 2013 at the Herzog August Library. The concept "piety" served as a representative concept for a whole package of questions which have been persistently asked in the field of Renaissance and humanistic studies since the 19th century: How Christian, religious, pious, churchy, or theological were they? What was holy to them, and how did they approach issues like holiness, the sacred, or the saints? And on the opposite side: how non- or un-Christian, unbelieving, pagan, irreligious, secular, and "this-worldly" were the humanists? How critical, frivolous, or even cynical was their engagement with religion, Christianity, and the Church? The contributions to this volume cover the period from the early 14th century through the second half of the 16th century and provide examples from many of central figures of humanism, from Francesco Petrarch to Giogrio Vasari and, by taking into account the diverse European humanistic cities, how Renaissance humanism, of different strengths in different (even divergent!) ways, affected a religious cultural change throughout late medieval and early modern Europe. These trends did not generally turn against Christianity, but subjected Christian religiosity, the Church, and Christian confessions to the new normativity of an exact body of works of pagan and Christian antiquity. In this way, the humanistic syntheses of ethics and religion automatically attempted to reconcile the late medieval forms of pious devotion, criticisms of the church and church reform as well as with the reforming ideals of the Reformation and of anti-Reformation Catholicism. These studies clarify in an impressive way, which impulses of humanism aimed at a renovation of Christianity and how, conversely, humanism was instrumentalized through the compelling force of Christianity.
