Aber wie ist es, wenn die Mutter nicht nur im übertragenen, sondern im wahren, vollen Wortsinn eine Heilige ist, kanonisiert, vom Papst heiliggesprochen? Wenn ihre sterblichen Überreste in großartiger Zeremonie, der Translatio, umgebettet in einen goldenen Schrein, als Ziel tausender, nach göttlicher Vergebung streben- der Pilger auserkoren sind? Wie lebt es sich im Schatten dieser alles überstrah- lenden Mutter-Persönlichkeit? Kann man da noch normal handeln, was ja auch sündigen mit einschließt, das profane Leben mit all seinen Herausforderungen, die nicht immer im reinsten Geiste und edelster Absicht an einen herangetragen werden, meistern? Sophie, mit ihrer Mutter, der Heiligen Elisabeth von Thürin- gen, als Fünfjährige bereits im Dienste an den Ärmsten, den Ausgestoßenen und Siechen, auf den Straßen des Landes unterwegs, wächst heran in der Allgegen- wart der Heilsbringerin. Später, als die Mutter längst aus ihrer leiblichen Hülle ge- fahren ist, heiratet Sophie, bekommt Kinder, wird Herzogin von Brabant. Als ihr Gatte stirbt, muss sie kämpfen. Geht das mit dem hohen Anspruch zusammen, den die Gebärerin ihr aufgebürdet hat?Am Ende erreicht sie viel und wird als Mutter des Landes Hessen verehrt.
