Jahrhundert verändern konnten. In unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen wird heute die Erkenntnis vertreten, dass sich die Gesellschaft des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einer Konsumgesellschaft entwickelt hat. Konsum, also der Erwerb sowie die Verwendung und der Gebrauch von Gütern und Dienstleistungen, besitzt eine weitreichende kulturelle, soziale und ökonomische Bedeutung. Die soziale Bedeutung, die Konsum haben kann, zeigt ein Artikel des Motley Fool. Hier wird beschrieben, dass viele Menschen den Besitz teurer Dinge mit Reichtum und einem hohen Status sowie Konsum allgemein mit Wohlstand in Verbindung bringen. Sich selbst und andere messen Menschen häufig daran, was beispielsweise am Körper getragen oder welches Auto gefahren wird. Dass man einem Menschen anhand seiner Besitztümer einen gewissen Status ablesen kann, erklärt Wiswede damit, dass Konsum in gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen eingebettet ist, also spezifische Konsumstile "Ausdruck einer sozialen Prägeform" sind. Eine der wichtigsten konsumsoziologischen Fragestellungen lautet daher aufzuzeigen, wie sozial-strukturelle Bedingungen und die daraus abgeleiteten Wertvorstellungen - kurz gesagt: die soziale Ungleichheit - Konsumverhalten beeinflussen.
