About the Book

English summary: In the conflict about the relationship of western modernity to other cultures, societies, and religions, the concept of the Enlightenment has played an important role, possibly even the most important role. The liberation of humans from the paternalism of religious and political-social authorities, through the discovery independence, and the ability of each to rely on their own reason, counts for many as a new level of cultural achievement that could longer be repressed. This distinction between a condition of Enlightenment and one of non-Enlightenment, however brought with it (and still brings!) many difficulties in how the two sides, divided in this manner, understand each other. The rationality of the Enlightenment, however, cannot be understood as a marker which distinguishes western modernity from all earlier epochs and all current outsiders. This rationality has its historical conditions and its boundaries. There have also been in other periods, and other regions, a reflection over the rationality of the "self" and its abilities. The purpose of this book is to show that although he maybe considered outdated, that in fact Aristotle remains a worthy partner in important, even necessary, discussions about rationality. Over nearly 1,500 years, the exceptionally durable and extraordinarily elastic accomplishments of mediation and comprehension, which was made possible across cultures (even between the "Orient" and the "Occident") through Aristotle, created a tense dialogue about rationality, which not only defined past societies, but also can be employed earnestly, as a contribution to the resolution of the problems of rationality, with which we must still deal with today.
