Mit diesem ersten Band der Reihe "Geschichte & Kirchenreform" wird ein weithin unbekanntes Kapitel der heftigen Auseinandersetzungen um das Erste Vatikanische Konzil erschlossen: Nach dem Tod des Grafen Clemens August von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg (1805-1885) auf Schloss Laer in Meschede ergeht sich die ultramontane Presse in Lobreden auf den berühmten "Anwalt der katholischen Sache". Doch die Paderborner Bistumsleitung verbietet ein kirchliches Begräbnis. Mit Genugtuung enthüllt das "Organ für katholische Reformbewegung" dann am 16. Oktober 1885, dass der eigenwillige Adelige 1873 und erneut kurz vor seinem Tod anonym eine der schärfsten Broschüren wider das neue Dogma von der päpstlichen Unfehlbarkeit veröffentlicht hat. Die gräfliche Familie kauft die gesamte Auflage auf. Für fast 100 Jahre ist eine breitere, sachgerechte Rezeption des Textes verhindert. Clemens August von Westphalen zählt wie Joseph Pape, Franz Heinrich Reusch oder Johann Friedrich von Schulte zu den namhaften Kritikern des I. Vatikanischen Konzils aus dem Sauerland. Die vorliegende Edition enthält beide Auflagen seiner brisanten Broschüre (1873/1885) und dokumentiert im Anhang deren Hintergründe, insbesondere altkatholische Reaktionen und den Austausch des Grafen mit seinem Jugendfreund Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler. Gegenüber dem Mainzer Bischof beanspruchte der Laie ein Recht zum theologischen Einspruch. Das hatte mit seinem Verständnis von Kirche zu tun. - Diese Edition führt zur Beantwortung der Frage, ob der Graf sich von Streitsucht oder Frömmigkeit leiten ließ.
