The story of Jokha Adede of Arbor Settlement, a sixteen year old girl with a heart full of evil. She alone awakens The Grove: an ancient burial ground full of dark creatures known only as the Mabaya; after murdering her first child, and the unexpected birth of her second. When several of her classmates are killed in front of her, she begins a flight for survival; not just for herself, but also for her once unwanted infant daughter, Uzuri.
She finds allies in the dark who both want different ends for her: Zaibaki, a Mabaya as Dark as those that hunted her; and Kausi, a Being of Light who sets her heart ablaze from the moment she lays eyes on him.
She has a choice to make, but whatever decides, Jokha knows that someone that she loves will have to die.
