The topic of magic often sparks both interest and controversy in the field of Wicca. It is common to find people develop an interest in becoming Witches solely because of the magic involved in Wicca. In the same vein, some others are interested in discovering the supposed supernaturality behind the performance of magic.
The term 'Magic' describes the process and practice of manipulating natural forces using one's personal powers and will to bring about desired changes in the universe. It is often the case that such changes cause awe, especially among those not skilled in the art. This is achievable through a variety of methods including spellcasting, rituals, candles, making potions, dances, incantations, wands, and so on. Magic as a concept is quite broader than Wicca. By this, I mean, magic is not an exclusive practice of Wiccans. Individuals and groups who are not in any way related to Wicca have always practiced and still practice magic. This implies that although magic is an essential part of Wicca, it is not an exclusive practice of the neopagan religion.
However, it must be mentioned that the term 'Magick' did not exist until the 19th century. The alteration was introduced and popularized via the works of Aleister Crowley, a key figure in the British Wiccan movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. This alteration was to establish a difference between the Wiccan magic and the activities of illusionists and stage magicians whose stock-in-trade was to entertain people with their magical powers. What is, today, known as magick exclusively describes the revered activities of Wiccans, and is also referred to as Witchcraft or simply 'The Craft'. To a large extent, the Wiccan magick isn't much different in form from the known ancient magic since it involves the same process and practice of bringing about changes in the physical realm with the help of supernatural powers. The aim however differs!

Admittedly, people perform magic for diverse purposes ranging from personal to commercial purposes. One could do magic to land themselves a better job, to avert dangers or protect themselves from harm, to get a partner, to recover from an ailment, to get wealthier, and a host of several other personal reasons. For Wiccans, however, the aim is not entirely so personal. This is not to say that Wiccans do not use magic for personal gains, protection and so on, but, rather, they view magic as a more of a spiritual journey for a Wiccan to express themselves. This explains why magick is a core part of the Wiccan festivals and rituals.
