About the Book

My father, William "Bill" Scruggs, was as unique as the title of this book, "Why My Father Ate Nice Lunches - The Bill Scruggs Story." This book tells the story of how I saw and interacted with my father growing up in a multi sibling family.Everyone sees the world just a little different than the next person and that is also true with siblings that grow up in the same household with the same mom, dad, brothers and sisters. By no means were we a perfect family, and I am not trying to portray that in any way, shape or form. I could write a book five times as long with all the hard times and low points of our families life, but I saw no purpose in doing so. I wanted to write a book that would bring a smile to the readers face and possibly a tear or two. Most of all, I wanted to honor my father as I looked up to him my entire life. He is in heaven now, but one thing I have learned since the passing of my mother and father is you can still honor your parents even after their death. You don't have to write a book about it. You can simply talk in a positive light about your parents when the opportunity presents itself. Didn't your mother tell you, "If you have nothing good to say about someone, don't say it!" Through my life's journey, especially working with inmates, I have come to realize that not everyone had a great mother or father growing up, and for those that didn't my heart truly goes out to you. However, you have the opportunity today to become a great parent to your children and break that family curse starting today. By no means did I love my father more than my mother, and maybe one day I will write a book about her, but for now I am taking this opportunity to share my father with the rest of the world as seen through my eyes. There are three areas I am trying to cover in this book. First, I am addressing, or acknowledging, that even though children are raised in the same family with the same parents and relatively close in age, their experiences growing up can be starkly different. In my case, I bet you could have all six of us kids complete a questionnaire with 100 questions and you may not even know we grew up in the same family. The second item I wanted to cover was all the great experiences that made my dad who he was in my eyes growing up in the 1960's - 1980's, and honor him doing so. Lastly, I wanted to find out, "Why My Father Ate Nice Lunches" while us kids were having school lunches and mom was at home with her pimento cheese sandwich!I hope after you read this book you will be able to say, "I know just what Bill Scruggs was going through, but could never put it into words", or "I wonder what Bill Scruggs who do in this situation?"My final note is, those of you who don't read the introduction to books better not follow that trend with this book. You will be missing too much of my dad if you miss a single page!
