White Fang and The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The Call of the Wild A short adventure story set in Yukon in Canada, during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890's where sled dogs were readily available and used. Written by Jack London and published in 1903, after spending time in Alaska during the Klondike Rush where he felt like he had found himself. In his time there he would have seen many dogs being used as sled dogs. The story concentrates on a dog called Buck, who stolen from his home and sold as a sled dog in Alaska. In this relentless environment, Buck becomes increasingly feral being forced into fights to survive and dominate over dogs. By the conclusion of the novel, he sheds all façade of civilisation and emerges as a leader in the wild relying on primordial instinct and experience. The Call of the Wild falls into the genre of anthromorphized fiction, in which the characters are animals that take on human traits. In the novel, London attributes human insights and feelings to Buck, which lead to him being accused of being a nature faker by giving unnatural attributes to an animal. The novel is also an example of pastoralism in America due to the hero returning to nature. According to this Buck symbolises a reciprocation against industrialisation and social convention with a return to nature. This motif is presented simply, clear and incredibly powerful in the novel making it a tale that is essentially fervently American. The everlasting appeal of this story is that it combines fable, allegory and parable. It incorporates elements of age old animal tales and fables such as Aesops Fables in which the aimals are the proclaimers of truth or traditional beast fables in which the beasts "substitute wit for insight." Influeneced by works such as the jungle book, London added more layers to his tale intensifying the meaning in his story, that was deficient in the other stories of the same genre at the same time of his writing. White Fang A novel by Jack London published in 1906, White Fang takes place in Yukon and NorthWest territories of Canada and follows a wild Wolfdog and describes White Fangs journey into domesticity. It is a thematic reflection and partner novel to The Call of the Wild. The novel is written from the viewpoint of the central canine character, which enabled London to examine how animals view humans and the world that they inhabit. It evaluates the violent world that both humans and animals live in and explores complex themes of morality and redemption. White fang is a 3/4 wolf and 1/4 dog, who was born in the wild. His mother is half wolf and half dog and was raised in captivity whereas his father is a completely wild wolf. At the beginning being raised in the wild by his mother, White Fang learns all the wild ways of his forest environment where you have to be hard to survive. It is during this time that he encounters humans for the first time. After his other is recognised by a human and both her and White Fang are taken, he learns about living with humans and the importance of loyalty and respect. He is fiercely protective of his owner, who then sells him for alcohol. This man then uses him as a fighting dog in the worse time of White Fangs life as he is tortured and used to fight and kill other dogs. There are many underlying themese of the novel and it has been described as " an allegory of humanitys progression from nature to civilisation." The stryimples that both individuals and society as a whole will require violence at some point, that society necessitates a conformity that undermines individualism in any form. London was influenced by the ideas of the survival of the fittest when writing this novel. Jack London uses his unique and beautiful style to describe the animals and their surroundings in such a way that the reader can see the sights being described and almost smell the smells and hear the noise of the talk too. White Fang is a heartbreaking tale.
