About the Book

White Blood is one of Nanak Singh's popular novels, published first in 1932, and later reprinted in dozens of subsequent editions. White Blood has literary as well as historical importance in the annals of the Punjabi novel. Although the author had earlier contributed some novelettes, this was his first major achievement, which like a milestone, showed the Punjabi novel the path of realism. The portrayal of Punjabi life, individuality of characters, and their proper psychoanalysis, is wonderfully described. Besides, a double well-knit plot, interspersed with dramatic situations and dramatic-irony is praiseworthy. The novel is written in an ironical style, which is an effective satire on the wrongdoings of society of the time. This peculiarity is intelligently crafted by the writer while sculpting various characters of the novel. It can be amply found in several scenes - representation of the deplorable condition of writers, Rodu, the juggler's struggle for a better life for the innocent child Sundri, preparation of country wine by Pala Singh and his men, the skirmish between the village farmers at a religious place, Anwar's dance performance, Sundri's addressing Anwar as "Maa Ji," dramatic transformation of Anwar's life. All these scenes are constructed with a brilliance that was never found earlier in the history of Punjabi literature.
About the Author: Nanak Singh (1897-1971) is popularly known as the father of Punjabi novel. He wrote over 40,000 pages in long hand Gurmukhi (Punjabi) script. The abiding and universal themes of love, friendship, and sacrifice found ample expression in Nanak Singh's novels. While "Pavittar Papi," and "Ik Miam Do Talwaran" are distinguished by tragic themes of unrequited love and supreme sacrifice, unmitigated greed and poverty was the theme of "Paap Di Khatti," which was also a reflection on rapidly changing values of the contemporary society. Nanak Singh had great understanding of human nature, especially of the young and the poor who were helpless and were exploited by selfish and greedy people. Nanak Singh pointed out fearlessly the evils of fundamentalism and selfishness in our society including those prevailing in Gurudwaras and Temples where many priests were dishonest and greedy and some indulged in immoral practice like consuming intoxicants and even keeping mistresses. Nanak Singh revolted against these evils in his novels and short stories. Translation of "Chitta Lahu" in English (titled White Blood) by Dilraj Singh Suri - a grandson of Nanak Singh is a small attempt to highlight the greatness of Nanak Singh. Dilraj holds a Masters degree in English and is Technical Writer by profession. He sanguinely hopes that non-Punjabi readers across the globe would benefit from the excellence of Nanak Singh's writings.
