About the Book

Have you ever wondered what long distance hikers do for food? Hikers like those on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) trek an average of 20 miles per day and will spend weeks and months at a time in the wilderness. The PCT is a continuous footpath that stretches from the California-Mexico border, runs along the backbones of California, Oregon and Washington until it terminates at the Canadian border. That's nearly 2,700 miles. What do they eat? What foods do they bring? This book is a sneak peek of what some of these long distance hikers, as well as their families, friends and supporters prepare when they head out on the trail. This is a community cookbook full of recipes submitted, compiled and published by PCTers. Whether you're a long distance hiker (no matter the trail), backpacker, camper, traveler or other outdoor adventurist, there are bound to be recipes you can use in preparation for your next journey. Even if you're not an out of doors type of person, this book gives you insight into the strange and wonderful concoctions that PCT hikers have come up with over the years. Have you heard of ramen instant noodles mixed with peanut butter? It's oh so tasty! Each year we plan to put together a new community cookbook to include these delectable dishes, along with new contributions from each new graduating class of PCT hikers. We hope to have the most amazing catalog of meals, snacks, side dishes, desserts and beverages specifically designed for long distance hikers and backpackers. The most wonderful part about this book is that the author donates 50% of his net profits to support the mission of the Pacific Crest Trail Association, to help protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. This book gives back to the trail that so many hikers fell in love with.
About the Author: Rainman is a serial entrepreneur, businessman and avid hiker. Last year he hiked the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim in one day, and he's planning to do it again next year (maybe rim-to-rim-to-rim). He's also an Assistant Organizer with Branch Whitney's 52 Peak Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. While living there he led hikers on incredibly challenging routes to some of the coolest peaks in Southern Nevada and Arizona. Rainman never backpacked a day in his life until April 15, 2015 - the day he began a thru-hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT). He was enamored from the very start. He loved everything about it: the beauty, the serenity, the challenge, and of course the people - everyone - from the hikers to the trail angels to the locals along the way. Although he had to leave at mile 652 (Walker Pass Campground) due to an injury, he intends on returning soon to finish the journey. In the meantime, he has his sights set on hiking from France to Spain along the Way of St. James (aka the Camino de Santiago de Compostela). He's also looking to participate in one (or more) of the Oxfam Trailwalker endurance events. But that will be after his hike through Costa Rica. Rainman had so many new business ideas throughout his hikes and especially during his time out on the PCT. He considered writing a series of books or stories; he thought about playing with wind turbine technology, given all the wind turbine fields he walked through along the way. He also contemplated opening a hiker's heaven that would sell food, gear and equipment to those on the trail. And to those who met Rainman, and hiked and camped with him know, he had some crazy ideas. However, some of his ideas - like this one - just might be worthwhile. A simple cookbook that gives back to the same trail that he (and so many others) fell in love with.
