Dazu kommt eine stetig wachsende Anzahl an Unternehmen, die sich meist ausschließlich über das Internet gründen, darstellen und ihr gesamtes Handeln darüber abwickeln. Der Antriebsmotor für neue Innovationen im Web ist hauptsächlich die Wirtschaft. Sämtliche virtuelle Bestandteile unter-liegen dabei einem rasanten und permanenten Wandel auf der Basis elektronischer Fortschritte. Genauso wandlungsfähig muss demnach das Marketing auf diesem Gebiet sein. Die Fachliteratur gibt für den noch jungen Begriff Online-Marketing keine einheitliche Definition an und ist teilweise widersprüchlich, dennoch wird häufig von einer Ergänzung des klassischen Marketings um die Komponente der Online-Kommunikation gesprochen. Hierbei werden die klassischen Marketing-Instrumente einerseits auf den Internet-Bereich übertragen und andererseits mit neuen technischen Möglichkeiten ergänzt. Insbesondere Letztere haben völlig neue Geschäfts- und Tätigkeitsfelder eröffnet und sollten genauer betrachtet werden. Lammenett unterteilt das Online-Marketing in die Bereiche Affiliate-Marketing, SEO (Suchmaschinenoptimierung), Keyword-Advertising, Online-Werbung, E-Mail-Marketing und Cross Media. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit sollen die Bereiche Keyword-Advertising, SEO und Social Media, als Teil des crossmedialen Marketing
