Es gibt Themen, die zu Teilaspekten eine lange Tradition haben, über die schon viel gesagt ist, und die doch immer wieder Faszination insbe- sondere in der Art ausüben, daß es noch Aspekte oder Ansätze geben mag, unter denen sie bisher noch nicht behandelt wurden und die neuere, bessere oder tiefere oder auch nur andere Einsichten erlauben. Ein solches Thema ist das zwischen dem Ersten und dem Zweiten im Ablauf, zwischen Pionier und Nachzügler, und sind die Fragen, die damit verbunden sind. Diese Fragen lassen sich aus zwei Blickwinkeln stellen, die eng miteinander zusammenhängen. Auf der einen Seite kann man von den einzelnen Unternehmen her nach den optimalen Strategien fragen, zum anderen kann man den Einfluß solcher Strategien auf Marktstrukturen unter wettbewerbstheoretischen sowie -politischen Aspekten betrachten. Betritt man ein solches Territorium, so muß man zuerst die stehenden Gebäude betrachten, und hier nun zeigt sich, daß sie unterschiedliche Strukturen aufweisen. Auf der einen Seite sucht man nach allgemeinen Hypothesen über Markteintrittsbarrieren und versucht diese mit ver- schiedenen Paradigmen zu etablieren. Auf der anderen Seite untersucht man die möglichen einzelwirtschaftlichen Pioniervorteile. Zum Teil er- gänzen sich diese Ansätze und liefern auch unter bestimmtem ein- schränkenden Bedingungen Antworten sowohl für Markteintrittsbarrie- ren wie für optimale Pionierstrategien, doch eben nur unter sehr ein- schränkenden Bedingungen.
