Horrende Wachstumsraten von japanischen Firmen bei zeitgleich stattfindenden Einbrüchen des gleichen Ausmaßes bei Unternehmen derselben Branche ließen europäische Manager zu Beginn der 90er Jahre aufhorchen. Erste Analysen zur Feststellung der Gründe für diese heterogene Entwicklung innerhalb der einzelnen Branchen wurden später beim ersten 'Überschwappen' von weit überlegenen japanischen Produkten auf den europäischen Markt, die aus fast jedem Alltagsgerät ein High-Tech-Gerät werden ließen, mit zunehmendem Nachdruck betrieben. Als Gründe für diese haushohe Überlegenheit wurden dabei vor allem veränderte Rahmenbedingungen - wie jene des Wandels der Marktstruktur vom Verkäufer- zum Käufermarkt, die extreme Beschleunigung des technischen Fortschritts, die zunehmend hohen Ansprüche an Produkte und deren Leistungen sowie die erhebliche Verbesserung der Kommunikations-, Informations- und Verkehrstechniken in Richtung der 'turbulent times' identifiziert, die sich mit den bisherigen europäischen Denkansätzen des strategischen Managements nicht mehr beherrschen ließen. Dies führte zum Wandel von den bisher dominierenden, marktorientierten Denkansätzen - wie jenen von Porter - zu den nun modischen 'ressourcenorientierten Ansätzen'. Diese neue Denkrichtung forderte dabei eine stärkere Konzentration auf die eigenen Ressourcen ein, da gemäß dem Ansatz nur damit die besten Chancen für das langfristige, erfolgreiche Bestehen am Markt gewährleistet werden können. Obwohl heutige Unternehmen diesen Ansatz in Form einer Fokussierung auf ihre Kernkompetenzen längst implementiert haben und aus einem Netzwerk von verbundenen Unternehmen heraus agieren, herrscht bis heute keine Einigkeit, welcher dieser Ansätze der geeignetere ist bzw. ob eine separate Betrachtung überhaupt sinnvoll erscheint.
