Geb�ude. Die feindlichen Berichte machen uns gewi� nur mit der extremsten Richtung bekannt, gegen die besonders der Kampf gefuhrt wurde. Sobald essich um die Wirkung auf das Gros des Volkes handelte, waren die allzu puritanischen Bestrebungen kaum zu halten, man mu�te sich zu Konzessionen verstehen, immer aber unter Wahrung der wesentlichen Prinzipien. Hier ist es um zun�chst bei dem Greifbaren zu bleiben bedeutsam, da� die Sekte der Bougres (bo gumilen) das Abendmahl als ein Opfer fur die D�monen ansah. Man begreift sofort, was aus solcher Auffassung resultiert. Wieviel Kraft f�r Irdisches, wieviel mehr Lebensfreude scheint bestehen zu bleiben, wenn das Mysterium des Abendmahles nicht als ein Opfer f�r die S�nden des lebenden Menschen sowohl als f�r d�monische Gewalten gilt. Die niederdr�ckende, hemmende Wirkung bleibt aus, es bleibt lediglich eine gewisse Furcht vor unbekanntem Feindlichen, das be s�nftigt wird. Diese Stimmung scheint auch aus den sakralen Bauten zu sprechen: Die Anspr�che des irdischen Menschen sind festgehalten gegen�ber einer hochgreifenden Auffassung. Sie spricht, so meine ich, schon aus der Vorliebe f�r die Saalanlage allein. Geleugnet darf auf der anderen Seite indes nicht werden, da� in diesem Kampf das Ir dische oft zu betont worden ist. Etwas dumpf Geballtes, materiell Ge bundenes haftet an den baulichen Sch�pfungen dieser Gebiete, das aber ebensosehr Ernst bedeutet. Es pa�t zu dem keuschen, arbeits vollen Leben, das, auch. Nach der Aussage der feindlichen Berichte, die Bons Hommes f�hrten. Die ganze seelische Disposition von Zeit und Menschen mu� ber�cksichtigt werden, auch um die baulichen Schopfungen zu'verstehen. Die einr�umige Anlage mit ihrem starken Appell an unmittelbar k�rperliches Leben bedeutet noch nicht an und f�r sich eine Aeu�erung brutal-somatischer Auffassung. Das starke Innenleben, wie es aus den arrets d'amour spricht, bedurfte eben starkerer, unmittelbarer Wir kungen auch in der bildenden Kunst, wahrend vorwiegend au�enlebige V�lker zur Darstellung ihres Ideals komplizierterer, spiritualisierender Mittel brauchten. Und von hier versteht man auch das Krampfhafte, fast Fiebrige, das an den Schopfungen selbst der Baukunst jener Gegenden haftet. Das auch �u�erlich sehr zum Ausdruck gekommene harmonische Gleichgewicht der griechischen Kultur etwa war zu einem kleinsten Teile nur erreicht, der schrillen Dissonanzen bei allem �u�ern Anschlu� Waren weit mehr als es zun�chst den Anschein hat. Aber die Sehnsucht nach ihrer Aufiosung war wenigstens versuchtzu manifestieren und mit solchem ernsten Glauben an ihre Bedeutung, da� die monumentalen Zeugen selbst den Ketzerkrieg �berdauerten, w�h rend die nordischen Eroberer aus der gleichen Zeit kaum ein bedeuten des Denkmal hinterlassen konnten und erst im Kontakt oder besser noch im Konflikt mit den s�dlichen Provinzen zu solchen gelangten.3.
