-An introduction to India's relationship with the West that focuses on the American and European artists inspired by their visits to independent India -Lavishly illustrated with nearly 400 works of art and many hitherto unpublished photographs from personal archives -A unique compilation of material on a much-neglected aspect of Indian art history -Authoritative essays by noted critics and art historians with four fascinating interviews with the artists Howard Hodgkin, Lynda Benglis, Luigi Ontani and Wolfgang Laib -Includes a specially commissioned contribution by artist Matti Braun and representative portfolios of 33 artists - such as Alexander Calder, Francesco Clemente, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Keith Sonnier and Roy Lichtenstein Western Artists and India: Creative Inspirations in Art and Design is the quintessential introduction to India and its relationship with the West, seen through the prism of design and the visual arts. It looks at cross-cultural exchanges between India and the West after decolonization, with its primary focus on important American and European artists and designers who drew inspiration from their visits to independent India. This account of their journeys is the conduit to an examination of the growth of Indian modernism and rare moments of local patronage. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 400 works of art and many hitherto unpublished photographs from personal archives, Western Artists and India is a unique compilation of seven authoritative essays by noted critics and art historians; four fascinating interviews with the artists Howard Hodgkin, Lynda Benglis, Luigi Ontani and Wolfgang Laib; a specially commissioned contribution by artist Matti Braun; and representative portfolios of 33 artists as well as a publisher. Contributors include: Devika Singh, Saloni Mathur, Benjamin Thelonious Fels, Farhan Sirajul Karim, Matti Braun, Nancy Adajania, Pradeep Dalal, Grant Watson.
