Fur die meisten Eltern ist die Diagnose einer "geistigen Behinderung" ihres Kindes traumatisierend. Lebensentwurfe werden zerstort, und viele Betroffene mussen zunachst ihre Trauer um das "verlorene Wunschkind" verarbeiten. Mit dem Behinderungstrauma geht den Familien der Spielraum verloren, der ansonsten zur Verfugung gestanden hatte. Dabei wird Spielraum in einem doppelten Wortsinn verstanden: als Entwicklungs- bzw. Entfaltungsspielraum, die Beziehung zum behinderten Kind frei zu gestalten, und als konkreter Spielraum, mit dem Kind unbelastet zu spielen. In der Auswertung von 37 qualitativen Interviews mit betroffenen Muttern und Vatern wird in dieser Dissertationsschrift systematisch herausgearbeitet, welches Leid mit dem Behinderungstrauma in den Familien Einzug erhalten hat und wie es ihnen schliesslich gelungen ist, dies zu verarbeiten und zu bewaltigen. Im Zuge des Forschungsprojekts kommt dabei erstmals im deutschen Sprachraum das Reaction to Diagnosis Interview zur Anwendung, das in einer Vielzahl internationaler Forschungsarbeiten bereits erprobt ist. Parallel zu den Interviews wurden mit den Kindern aus den Familien Musiktherapien durchgefuhrt, um die Auswirkungen der elterlichen Behinderungsverarbeitung weiter zu untersuchen: Steht besonders belasteten Kindern auch in der Musiktherapie weniger Spielraum zur Verfugung? In der ubergreifenden Auswertung beider Untersuchungen konnten deutliche Anhaltspunkte gefunden werden, die einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Behinderungstrauma der Eltern und dem Spielraum an Entwicklungsmoglichkeiten ihres Kindes erkennen lassen. Eltern mit Auflosung ihrer Traumatisierung berichten deutlich haufiger von responsiven und feinfuhligen Spielsituationen. Ohne Auflosung beschreiben Eltern hingegen erheblich ofter, Forder- und Lernspiele mit ihrem Kind zu spielen, womit sie unbewusst gegen die Traumatisierung durch die Behinderungsdiagnose anarbeiten. Als besonders belastet konnte dabei die Vater-Tochter-Beziehung identifiziert werden, die am starksten durch die Diagnose einer geistigen Behinderung erschuttert scheint. Auch in der Musiktherapie spiegeln sich diese Zusammenhange zwischen dem Auflosungsstatus der Eltern und dem Spiel der Kinder wider. Mit Auflosung des elterlichen Behinderungstraumas finden Gesprache und Spielgestaltungen der Kinder in der Musiktherapie in einem uberwiegend ausgeglichenen Verhaltnis statt. Demgegenuber interagieren und kommunizieren Kinder von Eltern ohne Auflosung weniger dialogisch. Es gelingt dennoch in fast allen Musiktherapien, einen kreativen Spielfluss aufzubauen und einen gemeinsamen Spielraum geteilter Spielfreude zu entwickeln. Im Buch werden schliesslich die methodischen Elemente untersucht und beschrieben, mit denen Spielraum in diesem Sinne entdeckt und zuruckerobert werden konnte.
