About the Book

Walking in the footsteps of Philip Marlowe, Spenser and Elvis Cole is Harry Webster - and he wishes he had bigger feet... Corinne Winfield is sexy and rich and she's lost her boyfriend - literally. He's Bryce Mansell, a bitter ex-soldier with emotional wounds that go far deeper than the insurgent bullet that ended his army career. Nobody has seen Mansell for weeks and private investigator Harry Webster's best guess is that he's simply grown tired of his menial job and his beautiful but mean-spirited girlfriend. As the detective digs deeper into the missing man's life, however, he discovers disturbing links to an extremist group called The Crusaders. They're short on numbers but long on hate and not too happy that Webster is asking questions about their former member. The more he asks, the less happy they become and the escalating violence that trails in Bryce Mansell's wake leads to an unimaginable conspiracy, forcing Webster to confront both his own inner demons and a real-life monster who is protecting a monstrous truth.By the author of A Pale Horse Passing By and What The Ashes Bring Forth.
About the Author: John Seeley has thought of himself as a writer ever since he was gifted his first manual typewriter at the age of fourteen. Like many other aspiring authors, real life tended to get in the way until his recent retirement after almost thirty years as a librarian and part-time publisher's reader, occupying a safe foxhole in the no man's land between writer and reader. His CV also lists time served as a surveyor, furniture warehouseman, stable hand at a bloodstock auctioneers, refuse collector and a brief spell as a teacher. During his training for the latter he was fortunate enough to be mentored by the late, great Reginald Hill, who not only encouraged him to keep writing but recommended him for the position of publisher's reader for the famous and much-missed Collins Crime Club. He served in this capacity until the imprint's demise in 1994, during which time he helped to spot the early promise of such talents as Mike Ripley and Henning Mankel - though his good opinion of the latter wasn't enough to get the creator of Wallender a contract! His interest in crime fiction also led to his involvement with the Shot in the Dark co-operative, publishers of a much-praised fanzine of that name that lives on as the popular website Shots. The author was the publications reviews editor for the first three years of its existence and has a bedroom full of first edition crime novels to prove it! Throughout the intervening years the author never lost his love of writing and, in particular, his taste for the witty private eye novels of Raymond Chandler, Robert B. Parker and the many others who have graced this particular crime genre. He also never stopped writing himself, beginning several novels that early retirement finally gave him the opportunity to finish. The first two of these When A Pale Horse Passes By and What The Ashes Bring Forth are both available in large paperback and Kindle format and, like Webster's White Devil, feature the irreverent private detective, Harry Webster, and add a distinctive English twist to the classic American form. John Seeley lives near Doncaster in a terraced house built for a much smaller man. His special likes are crime fiction, TV cop shows, American comic books, chop and shop video games and the musical works of Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon. He does not own a cat and has no wish to, so please don't send him one.
