About the Book

The early summer sun glinted brightly off the rows of bicycles chained outside Frederick Douglass High School. Today was graduation, and the old brick building teemed with students milling about in caps and gowns awaiting the big processional. Among the seniors was David Young, who stood a bit off to the side, staring down at his phone avoiding eye contact. No one would guess that after nearly failing out his junior year, David now felt honoured to be counted among this graduating class.

The turnaround had started last fall with a stern but caring teacher who believed in David's potential. Mr. Conway, himself a first-generation college student, lit a spark in David to pursue education as a pathway to purpose. He coaxed David gently through self-doubt back into diligent study habits again. In the process, David discovered his own voice analyzing complex social dynamics around privilege and power.

This growth opened David's eyes to bias woven into society which too often went unacknowledged. He noticed it sharply last summer during a routine traffic stop when his uncle was detained aggressively just for "looking suspicious." David saw how proceeds from injustice rippled on long afterwards. He hoped college might teach him to speak against prejudices still thriving while offering opportunity to lift other marginalized voices too afraid or resigned to push back themselves.

For now though, David tucked away his phone finally and straightened the crimson gown draped over his lanky frame. This milestone, unthinkable last year, represented redemption. He still marveled at the family and friends surrounding him now who refused to let David's self-doubt cut short his potential...

There across the sunny lawn stood Bo waving eagerly. Bo - his friend since childhood excursions catching fireflies, now the salutatorian with architecture school on the horizon. Seeing David, Bo broke into a huge grin and mimed shooting three-pointer jump-shots. David just laughed and shook his head, amazed that something as simple as friendship could ground all the lofty aspirations fluttering anxiously in his chest.

Maybe life's hardest but most rewarding challenges were allowing people to stand with you when storms hit rather than tough it out alone. With loved ones' arms encircling him, David felt confident to embrace cloudy skies ahead, knowing brighter days would always chase uncertain nights if heart stayed humble and hope kept faith.

This story opens as David sets off one overcast summer afternoon to meet his lifelong friend Bo, eager to enjoy carefree days before college. But chance dark encounters force David to grapple with prejudices threatening to erode innocent joys and skew still-blossoming dreams. Through it all, David discovers power in uplifting voices unseen and forging new community against gathering unrest.
