About the Book

Praise for The Way We Were Written with a poetic flare, this book is a good light read that many, young and old can relate to and sympathise with. Covered in witty humour and charming metaphors it is an honest and heart felt delve into the world of young romance. ***** Grace Edward Scottish Field Such a joy to read The Way We Were; a kind of trip down memory lane for me in regard to so many mentioned places woven into your moving story of unrequited love. I'm sure it rings true for so many of us from our generation. Patricia Macadam From the view in winter. The extracts from diaries from half a century ago capture a short-lived love affair between two Edinburgh teenagers back in the 1970s, poetically recording a young man's joys and highs when the relationship with Alison was going well alongside writing of the lows, the despair and the misery of unrequited love. From a distance of forty years I can now discern patterns and key mistakes which of course tear at the soul and clutch at the heart. They say if is the saddest word in the English language. If only I'd played a smarter, less intemperate and more measured hand with the lovely Alison or as rather beautifully expressed by Father Gianni in the BBC series set in Tuscany 'Second Chance Summer' '...the problem is you only learn with age and experience so by the time you realise you have learnt a lot of things unfortunately a lot of time has passed and many chances have been lost.' And today, if I had access to a time-machine what then? Most of all I'd wish to put an arm around my younger self's shoulder and quote Julian of Norwich's words: 'All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.'But if I were to be offered some Faustian pact whereby I could travel back in time and change some key staging posts in life, tempting as it might be to accept, I'd probably reject the Devil's offer preferring the way life worked out afterwards. But of course, shades of the film Sliding Doors spring to mind. And having revisited these journals after four decades and lived with them over recent months, as I drift off to sleep of a summer's evening, ethereal dreams and visions of Alison occasionally dance across the screen and the night air and haunting images of crossroads in life not taken, offering tantalising glimpses of a different life not led with all their interesting unexplored avenues.
