About the Book

These poems, by poet and historian of early modern art Jennifer Nelson, are in themselves artworks that make exquisite trouble, ranging from the Renaissance to the Covid era. Nelson gives voice to the turbulence beneath surfaces, whether the surface be a painting or the sights of our current world.

The book is a triptych of volatile sections. In "Tenure Dossier," a wry dive into the workplace, each poem's title is lifted from the documents of academic bureaucracy. In "Ekphrases," Nelson's attention to the visual gives voice to paintings resonant with our present geopolitics, inseparable from the acts and legacies of colonialism. In closing, "Primordial Tide Pools" opens onto complex living landscapes, earthly forests of organic entanglement, extraction, and interdependence, where we find ourselves ensnarled in imperiled ecologies and techno-webs of information and plunder. Here, we may encounter a sudden raccoon in urban space-- "grid modernity feralized." Here we may press into the "loam of the forest floor, / the ongoing of those--unremembered / and those remembered wrong."

The poems gaze into and grapple with the act of seeing and the act of speaking for paintings and art--how one bears the ongoing stories that art carries forward through time. Though it may be the case that "the world is dying," Nelson's ear is tuned to the "echo of abundance" through which the now unseen past calls to us. And here we may persist: "Let being and making/be the fullest/forms of grief ." Nelson's deep knowledge, life experience, care-for-the-world, and capacious attentions infuse this collection where, throughout. she renews the act of seeing. generating in these poems complex waves patterns of light, disturbance, and beauty.
