Die meisten begegnen diesem Tag mit großer Erwartungshaltung. Sie wollen möglichst schnell Schreiben, Lesen und Rechnen lernen, um endlich intensiv an der Kultur der Erwachsenen teilnehmen zu können. Doch der Eintritt in die Schule ist auch mit großen Veränderungen für die Kinder verbunden. Nicht nur die Struktur der Zeit ist anders als im Kindergarten und zu Hause, auch der Raum und seine Möglichkeiten ändern sich. Die Veränderungen in den sozialen Beziehungen belasten die Kinder zusätzlich. Sie müssen sich nicht nur von den Eltern ablösen, sondern werden zusätzlich auch mit unbekannten Mitschüler und Lehrern konfrontiert. Die Begegnung mit diesem komplexen, anfangs auch verwirrenden neuen Lebensraum prägt nachhaltig das Bild, das die Kinder von Schule und schulischem Lernen gewinnen. Aber mit dem Eintritt in die Schule ist dieses Bild keinesfalls vollständig, denn die Vorstellungen der Kinder entwickeln sich permanent aufgrund ihrer Erfahrungen, die sie im Laufe ihrer Schulzeit sammeln, weiter. Aus ihnen gehen Einstellungen, Erwartungen, Wünsche und Idealbilder hervor. Mit jedem Schultag kann es zu einer Modifikation dieses subjektiven Bildes kommen. Mögliche Gründe könnten u.a. Veränderungen in den sozialen Beziehungen zu Mitschülern, Lehrern etc. sein sowie positive oder negative Erlebnisse, Erfolge und Misserfolge aber auch Überforderungen und Unterforderungen der Schüler. Obwohl diese Veränderungen im Laufe der Jahre viel über die Qualität von Schule aussagen können, wurden sie bisher in der Forschung - vor allem für die Grundschule - jedoch kaum berücksichtigt.
