Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Allgemeines und Theorien, Note: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Einführung in die Internationalen Beziehungen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Vom 21. bis 28. Februar 1972 besuchte der damalige US-amerikanische Präsident Richard M. Nixon die Volksrepublik China. Es war der erste Besuch eines amtierenden Präsidenten in dem kommunistischen Riesenreich und bedeutete de facto die Anerkennung Rotchinas. Dies stellte die wichtigste außenpolitische Wende der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika seit dem Beginn des Kalten Krieges dar, die Nixons Kritiker und politische Freunde, Amerikas Gegner und Verbündete gleichermaßen irritierte. Denn seit dem Jahre 1949, als die chinesischen Kommunisten mit ihrem Führer Mao Zedong an der Spitze, die von den USA unterstützten Nationalchinesen Chiang Kai-sheks besiegt hatten und daraufhin die Volksrepublik ausgerufen hatten, lehnten alle folgenden US-Regierungen eine Anerkennung Rotchinas strikt ab. Stattdessen unterhielt man diplomatische Beziehungen zu der Inselprovinz Taiwan, auf die sich die Nationalchinesen zurückgezogen hatten, und pochte stets auf dem Alleinvertretungsanspruch Taiwans für das gesamte chinesische Volk. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Tatsachen war Richard Nixons Aufenthalt in Peking in den Augen seiner Zeitgenossen wahrlich "A week that changed the world", wie er selbst konstatierte. (Vgl. Nixon 1978: 476) Doch warum vollzog der Präsident nun überhaupt diesen Schritt zur Öffnung Chinas? Warum erkannten Nixon und seine engsten außenpolitischen Ratgeber um den Nationalen Sicherheitsberater Henry A. Kissinger die Volksrepublik de facto an und leiteten einen Prozess ein, an dessen Ende 1979 die offizielle Aufnahme diplomatischer Beziehungen stand? Welches Verständnis des internationalen Staatensystems verbarg sich hinter diesem außenpolitischen Schachzug des Weißen Hauses? Antworten auf diese Fragen soll
