War Shirt back cover
War Shirt is a sequel to Bad Wing Crow written in the voice of that book's hero, Sam Tucker. Most of the story takes place in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1900. Contrary to what you might expect, the book is not about war. It does, however, deal with the impact events of war, like the Wounded Knee massacre, had on the lives of the Lakota people.
The story is about a Lakota family's flight and fight to reclaim their freedom, pride, and identity after having their lives disrupted by the white man. The infamous Indian Boarding Schools are featured prominently. There is a mystery to solve as well.
The Lakota boy, Osota, and his best friend, Jaypete, are the two main protagonists, but there are many interesting characters to get to know. Sam Tucker, Marshal Bass Reeves and Jim Davis are former slaves. Jacques Serier and Silas McKeever are mountain men, and a federal judge, and a state senator are thrown into the mix. Several important female characters are featured including Kangi' Taka, Wihinapa, Penelope Serier, Lark, and Helena Hopkins. These ladies don't take a back seat to anyone. Headmaster Hopkins, Ryan O'Rourke and the politically ambitious governor, Christopher Nord, are characters you probably won't like as much.
Mato Zi' (Yellow Bear), a veteran of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee, is a man broken by losses suffered at the hands of white men and by whiskey. You will enjoy his life-changing afternoon at the Gold Pan Saloon in Custer City.
A very unique tribe is formed, and two young Shirt Wearers are named as its leaders and protectors. Their War Shirts give them wisdom, protection and a little luck. A couple of fast horses don't hurt anything either.
