About the Book

WALDO THE PAPER MAN Mark Jenkins' dream career, to be a famous comic strip artist, is failing. His Herbie The Hobo comic strip is losing popularity and he is afraid he will also lose his longtime sweetheart, Maggie Stevens, if he doesn't get a full time job to support her. One night, when he is ready to give up in despair, a figure he drew while doodling suddenly rises as a paper man and then fleshes out into a regular, tiny person. At first Mark thinks the little man is his imagination, but is eventually convinced that Waldo Wallet is real. He is from an alternate world and is here to help Mark create the cartoon that will make him rich and famous. Although Mark and Maggie are still very much in love, their love is on rocky ground; Maggie is getting tired of waiting for a marriage proposal. Mark takes a part time job. To phase out the Herbie The Hobo cartoon, Mark gives him a steady job on a ranch. Herbie becomes funnier and his popularity increases. Mark has to give quit his job to keep up with both cartoons. Waldo tells Mark about his fiancé, who can also appear in this world as she wishes. She begins to be with Waldo sometimes. As the demand from other newspapers for Marks' new cartoon strip increases, so does the amount of his work. He hires Lola, a sexy blond art student from the local college, as his part time helper. Maggie isn't too happy over his choice, but Lola was the only one to apply for the job, and Mark has to have help or drop one of his cartoons. Lola is constantly making a play for Mark. She realizes he is going places with his cartoons and she plans to be the one to go with him. Waldo recognizes this almost right away and tries to warn Mark. At first Mark doesn't believe it, but soon realizes Waldo is right. Waldo has his hands full helping Mark with some of his invisible antics, keeping Lola away from him. Lola is all the extra help Mark can get so he can't fire her. Amelia stays with Waldo more often now, to help him keep Lola away from Mark. As Mark becomes more successful, he becomes engaged to Maggie, but almost loses her due to Lola's strengthened efforts to marry him. Lola's reason for thinking she has to marry for money is discovered by Maggie and solved, so Lola gives up on Mark. She finds a love of her own. Amelia and Waldo are disappointed that they were unable to make Mark and Maggie small enough to enter their land, to attend their wedding. With Maggie and Marks' wedding only three weeks later, it was planned that the two couples will then take a honeymoon together.
