Eine entlegene, fast schon isolierte Anhöhe in den österreichischen Alpen in den 1850er-Jahre. Der kleine Peter, den jedermann nur Peterl oder den Walbauernbub nennt, wächst auf dem Bergbauernhof seiner Familie auf. Er ist das älteste von acht Kindern. Sein fleißiger, schweigsamer Vater, ein stilles, ernstes Wesen, behandelt ihn mit milder Strenge und zieht ihn schon in seinen jungen Jahren zu diversen Arbeiten am elterlichen Hof heran. Seine Mutter hingegen hat nichts als Liebe und unterstützt seine grenzenlose Neugierde und seinen Lerneifer.

Das Leben des kleinen Peterl spielt sich in einem märchenhaften, sorglosen Paradies ab. Zumeist durchstreift er die riesigen Tannen-, Fichten- und Föhrenwälder, steigt zu den Almen hinauf, läuft in den duftenden Wiesen herum, hütet Kühe und Ziegen. Er trifft aber auch auf zahlreiche sonderbare Gestalten wie zum Beispiel die blinde Einlegerin Jula, den Federlschneider Justus Alland, den Wilderer Toni, der ein schlimmes Ende nimmt, die Kramerthresel oder die gottlosen fremden Holzknechte. Die Geschichten rund um den alten Kachelofen in der elterlichen Stube regen zum Lächeln an, genauso wie die skurrile Tradition des fahrenden Zechens oder Peters Ehrenamt als Geschichtenerzähler für seine jüngeren Geschwister. Man zittert mit dem kleinen Buben mit, der sich in der Christnacht im dunklen Wald verläuft; man zappelt ungeduldig an seiner Seite, während er auf das Schloss, das endlich seine Schätze versperren soll, oder auf das versprochene und heiß ersehnte Taschenmesser wartet; man wischt sich eine Träne vom Auge, wenn er den Tod eines Ahnen oder die letzten Atemzüge eines Nachbarn schildert.

Die Waldheimat ist das autobiografische Hauptwerk des österreichischen Schriftsteller Peter Rosegger (1843-1918). Es zählt zu den großen Klassikern der österreichischen Literatur, in einer Reihe mit den Schriften Stefan Zweigs, Joseph Roths, Robert Musils et vieler anderer zu nennen. Leider ist es heute aber ein wenig in Vergessenheit geraten.

In dieser Ausgabe wird der Text den LeserInnen in einer neuen, kommentierten Version zugänglich gemacht und bringt eine zweifach verschwundene Welt wieder zurück: jene der Kleinbauern des 19.
