Dessen architektonische Erscheinungsform hat sich über die Jahre verändert - wo früher mächtige Schlösser gebaut wurden stehen nun moderne Monumente aus verpiegeltem Glas und Stahl und sind zu einem Ausdruck der Globalisierung geworden. Doch auch die "klassische" Architektur der politischen Macht wird nach wie vor gebaut - bevorzugt in nicht- demokratischen Ländern, entworfen von dem who's who der internationalen Architektenszene - so auch in Peking. Im Vorfeld der Olympischen Sommerspiele 2008 fand dort eine rasante Veränderung des Stadtbildes statt und einige besonders spektakuläre Neubauten standen im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit. Ihnen wird inner- und außerhalb Chinas bereits Symbolcharakter zugeschrieben. Sie wurden größtenteils von westlichen Architekten geplant und gebaut. Diese Tatsache hat in Deutschland und anderen westlichen Ländern eine Debatte über Architektur und Moral ausgelöst. Diese Debatte im Spannungsfeld zwischen Politik, Geld und Baukunst hat dabei noch eine besonders spannende Komponente: Die chinesische Kultur erscheint dem westlichen Betrachter oftmals fremd und andersartig und so mag ihm auch die chinesische Interpretation von Architektur zuweilen erscheinen. Es werden dort andere Kriterien herangezogen als in westlichen Kulturkreisen üblich, was eine besondere Herausforderung für westliche Architekten darstellt. Die Kenntnis verschiedener Aspekte chinesischer Kultur und Gesellschaft ist daher besonders wichtig, um moderne Symbolarchitektur in China als eine Art Botschaft deuten zu k
