About the Book

English summary: Alfred F. Loisy's The Gospel and the Church offers the opportunity to examine the beginnings of Catholic critical scholarship with a view toward the implications of that scholarship for the task of contemporary theology. The book marks a beginning and implies a shift from one intellectual horizon (traditional Catholicism) to another (historical consciousness). In an ecumenical age, Loisy's apologetic concerns may be somewhat out of place. His criticism of Protestant liberalism raises the question of whether there is a distinction between the Protestant and the Catholic position. Loisy's objective was twofold: to establish critical scholarship within Roman Catholicism, and to work out the implications of that scholarship for the stance of the church within modern society. Carl-Friedrich Geyer tries to assess Loisy's significance and his understanding of religion as a living fact, not a concept of mind. German text.
