Krankheit ist im Bernhardschen Werk omnipräsent, denn nahezu alle Menschen leiden unter der einen oder anderen Krankheit. Eine Einteilung in "Gesunde" und "Kranke" lässt sich oft nicht vornehmen, lediglich der Grad der Krankheit unterscheidet die Personen. Einige sind nur leicht kränklich, andere leiden an einer schweren "Todeskrankheit". Es sind aber nicht nur die Menschen krank, sondern die gesamte erzählte Welt scheint von Schmerzen und Sinnlosigkeit zerfressen, alles ist unabänderlich krank. Bernhards Faszination für das Thema durchzieht wie ein Leitfaden sämtliche seiner Werke und ist insbesondere an den beiden Brüdern aus dem Roman AMRAS, den Bernhard selbst als sein "Lieblingsbuch" bezeichnet hat, gut zu sehen. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich näher auf die Krankheitsdarstellung der Brüder Karl und Walter aus dem 1962 veröffentlichten Werk eingehen. Lässt sich anhand der von Bernhard beschriebenen Symptome eine Diagnose stellen? Leiden die beiden Brüder an einer realen Krankheit oder mischt sich der Autor aus den verschiedensten Symptomen einen passenden Krankheitscocktail ganz nach seinen Bedürfnissen zusammen? Diesen Fragen soll mithilfe moderner diagnostischer Kriterien des DIAGNOSTISCHEN UND STATISTISCHEN HANDBUCHES PSYCHISCHER STÖRUNGEN (DSM)nachgegangen werden. Neben dem Blick auf die Diagnosestellung soll immer auch untersucht werden, was Bernhard mit seinen Krankheitsbeschreibungen ausdrücken möchte. Hierbei steht insbesondere die Frage im Vordergrund, ob (und wenn ja, in welcher Weise) die Krankheiten als Metapher gemeint sind. Für diese Fragestellung wird sowohl auf Novalis' Ausführungen zur Krankheit als auch auf Antonovsk
