Wahlen werden nach wie vor haufig mit moderner Demokratie gleichgesetzt, die sie in Verwirklichung burgerlicher Gleichheit sozusagen konstitutiv herstellen sollen. Wahlen in der Vormoderne hingegen gelten als blosses Ritual, das ohnehin nur von einer privilegierten mannlichen Minderheit zur Zementierung einer standisch-patronal vorgegebenen Hierarchie zelebriert wurde. Der vorliegende Band zeigt hingegen, dass Wahlen in unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsformen als politisches Instrument par excellence zur Herstellung von Legitimitat distributiver Gerechtigkeit beim Zugang zu Amtern und Ressourcen und zur kollektiven Verstandigung uber geeignete Kandidaten dienen. Gerade aufgrund ihrer gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung waren und sind Wahlen stets ein Brennpunkt von Manipulationsversuchen, Korruptionsanklagen und gesetzgeberischen Praventionsmassnahmen. Wie die Kandidaturen (lat. von weiss, rein) und ihre Kampagnen sind also auch Wahlen ein Vorgang, mit dem gesellschaftliche Missstande bereinigt und eine Erneuerung des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts gewahrleistet werden soll, und diesbezuglich gibt es frappierende Kontinuitaten zwischen Fruhneuzeit und Moderne. Ein Schwerpunkt des Bandes liegt auf den fruhneuzeitlichen Stadtgesellschaften Italiens, deren Tendenz zur Oligarchisierung sich paradoxerweise auch in ihrer intensiven Beschaftigung mit Wahlprozeduren ausdruckt, und die deshalb in ihrer Zeit als vorbildlich galten. Die damalige institutionelle und gesetzgeberische Kreativitat in der Bekampfung von Wahlkorruption auf der einen Seite und der Ausbalancierung dieses Regelwerks mittels klientelistischer und patronaler Strategien zur Kandidatenkur auf der anderen Seite lasst die Brisanz und Aktualitat des Themas erahnen.
