Auf der einen Seite hat der Ausgang der Wahlen oft einen nachhaltigen Einfluss auf Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur, und auf der anderen Seite legitimieren die Wahlen auf geradezu symbolische Weise die politische Akteure. Die Medien spielen in Zeiten des Wahlkampfes eine immer wichtigere und zunehmend aktivere Rolle. Vor allem das Fernsehen hat sich als zentrale Kommunikations- und Informationsplattform etabliert. Nicht zuletzt deshalb haben sich Kommunikationswissenschaftler auf dieses Medium in ihrer Analyse von Wahlkampfen fokussiert. In dieser Lizentiatsarbeit wird eine ganz spezifische Frage aus diesem Themenkreis bearbeitet: Die franzosische Wahlkampfberichterstattung des Jahres 2007. Da in Frankreich bisher Forschung zu dieser Thematik weitgehend fehlt, werden die Resultate mit Resultaten aus den gut erforschten US-Wahlkampfen verglichen. Analyseeinheit der Untersuchung bilden Soundbites, das heisst Originaltonauftritte von Kandidaten in den Hauptnachrichtensendungen wahrend der franzosischen Wahlkampfphase 2007. Insgesamt wurden 480 Beitrage ausgewertet, die sich aus den Hauptnachrichtensendungen des offentlich-rechtlichen Senders F2 und des Privatsenders TF1 zusammensetzen. Die empirischen Analysen basieren auf dem theoretischen Hintergrund der Modernisierungstheorie. Sie zeigen, dass auch in Frankreich moderne Wahlkampfmethoden Eingang gefunden haben. Insbesondere hat sich gezeigt, dass Elemente wie Soundbite Journalismus, Dethematisierung oder Negativitat der Berichterstattung identifiziert werden konnen.
