Die USA sind dabei ein prototypisches Beispiel für eine stark mediatisierte Kommunikationsgesellschaft, in der die Medien auch auf die Politik einen starken Druck ausüben. So entspricht die Darstellung von Politik in den USA und in allen westlichen Demokratien immer mehr den Regeln der Medien. Politik wird inszeniert, wobei die Politik vielfach deutlich der spezifischen Logik der Medien folgt und dabei Phänomene erzeugt, von denen das hervorstechendste das der Personalisierung von Politik ist. Gerade im US-Wahlkampf ist ein Trend zur Personalisierung deutlich zu erkennen, denn bei der Wahl werden Wahlentscheidungen sehr stark an Personen und nicht so sehr an Parteien geknüpft. Es stellt sich dabei die Frage, welchen Einfluss die Medien im Einzelnen auf die Wahlkampfführung in den USA ausüben und auf welche Weise die mediale Politikdarstellung auf Wahlentscheidungen Einfluss nimmt. Das Gewicht der Medien ist dabei unbestritten. Medien gehören im Wahlkampf zu einer der wichtigsten Einrichtungen. Die Wahlkampfstrategien der Kandidaten und Parteien sind unmittelbar an die spezifische Logik der Medien geknüpft. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die besondere Bedeutung der Medien für die Strategien im US-amerikanischen Wahlkampf herauszustellen. Es soll gezeigt werden, welche Funktionen den Medien im Einzelnen im Wahlkampf zukommen und auf welche Weise sich die Strategien im Wahlkampf auf die besondere Rolle der Medien ausrichten.
