Divagando por el Mare Internum en el falucho de Ansúrez, con pacotillas comerciales de Vinaroz a Denia, de Torrevieja a Ibiza, o de Mahón a Cartagena, pasaron Donata y Confusio luengos días apacibles, sin inclemencias azarosas del viento y las aguas. En la dulce soledad marítima, aprovechando el ocio de las bonanzas, contó Diego Ansúrez a sus amigos diferentes sucesos festivos y graves de su inquieta vida, desde que abandonó a la familia y al padre para lanzarse a correr ásperas aventuras de mar y tierra; y lo que mayormente sorprendió y cautivó a los amantes fue la forma o modo peregrino con que hubo de encontrar y conocer a la hembra que tenía por esposa, o cosa tal... El singularísimo hallazgo de mujer fue dispuesto por Dios con un golpetazo furibundo que a continuación se refiere.En Febrero del 49 fue a Játiva Diego Ansúrez a negociar cambalache de aguardiente anisado por pieles y arroz (que así el menudo comercio cambiaba las especies, empleando el dinero tan sólo para las diferencias). Dos días no más estuvo allí; y cuando, ultimados los tratos y arreglos, a su vivienda se retiraba en noche tenebrosa por calles solitarias y torcidas, sufrió un grave accidente pasando al ras de los muros de un convento que llaman Consolación. Iba el hombre con el cuidado de la obscuridad echando las manos por delante, los ojos al suelo fangoso y a los traicioneros dobleces de las tapias, cuando de improviso le cayó encima un grande y pesado bulto... El golpe fue tremendo, más por la pesadumbre que por la dureza del objeto caído. ¿Qué era, vive Dios?Si al recibir el topetazo pensó Ansúrez en el desprendimiento de un balcón o de un trozo de alero, no tardó en reconocer que el bulto podía ser un disforme lío de esteras que tuviera por ánima huesos, lingotes de hierro, quizás un par de macetas con plantas arbóreas. El grito sacrílego que dio al sentir el trastazo en su cabeza y hombro derecho, fue contestado por un lamento que del propio bulto salía, el cual no era rollo de esteras, ni colchón relleno de objetos duros, sino un ser humano, grande como lo que llamamos persona... Al quejido siguieron voces que indudablemente delataban espanto de mujer... Dolorido del cuello y de Los lomos, inclinose Ansúrez vomitando blasfemias, y vio ropas negras y blancas... El bulto calló, como si de la conmoción de su caída perdiera el conocimiento, y el hombre, para verlo mejor, se puso de rodillas diciendo: ¡Ajos, cebollas, berenjenas y cohombros!... Yo pensé que era un pedazo de torre o un cacho de cornisa, y ahora veo que es usted una monja... Por poco me mata en su caída... diré mejor en su fuga... ¿Se descolgaba usted con esa soga que tiene en las manos?... ¡Ajos y cebolletas! ¿Por qué no cogió un chicote de más poder?... ¿Se le rompió antes de llegar al suelo?... Ya pudo avisar, señora, y yo me habría puesto en facha para recogerla... Por las verijas de San Pedro, que me ha derrengado un hombro, y me ha roto una oreja... y en el quiebro que hice creyendo que se me venía encima una torre, pienso que me he roto por la cintura, del dolor que siento, ¡ay!... A ver, comadre, si puede levantarse... ¡upa! No puede... ¡Upa otra vez, valiente!....
