Issue d'une famille de riches fermiers de l'Allier, Hubertine Auclert (1848-1914) est la fi lle d'un père républicain ardemment opposé à Napoléon III (cela lui vaudra d'être démis de ses fonctions d'édile suite au coup d'État de 1851), et d'une mère qui portait secours aux fi lles mères, alors considérées comme des réprouvées, donc rejetées par la société. Tout semblait concourir pour qu'Hubertine Auclert entre dans les ordres très croyante, elle se fait pourtant exclure de deux institutions religieuses, jugée trop exaltée, trop révoltée, trop indépendante. Le profond ressentiment qu'elle en garde sera à la source même de son anticléricalisme. Orpheline à ses dix-huit ans, elle jouit d'une grande liberté fi nancière grâce à son héritage et peut se rendre à Paris, où la destitution de Napoléon III et l'avènement de la république augurent une ère nouvelle pour l'émancipation des femmes: émancipation qu'elles devront cependant conquérir âprement.

Hubertine Auclert est de celles qui feront bouger les lignes de front, inlassablement, vaillamment. Elle lance ainsi en 1881 La Citoyenne, un journal bimensuel qui entendait encourager les femmes à s'imposer dans l'espace politique en exigeant la reconnaissance de leurs droits, à commencer par celui de voter, mais aussi celui d'être élues. Elle prend en effet conscience que les lois ne sont qu'un instrument de domination édictées et votées par les hommes pour les hommes, elles n'ont pour but que de maintenir l'état de domesticité, si ce n'est de servitude et d'esclavage, dont sont victimes les femmes.

Le Vote des femmes paraît en 1908, et s'inscrit dans la continuité du combat qu'Hubertine Auclert mena toute sa vie. Son constat est sans appel le suffrage dit « universel » n'est qu'un simulacre, dès lors qu'il exclut les citoyennes. Cet ouvrage n'est pourtant pas seulement un plaidoyer pour l'accès des femmes au droit de vote, et à travers lui, à la vie politique; elle défend l'avènement d'un bouleversement sociétal bien plus profond, car « les femmes -- par la force du nombre de leurs bulletins de vote -- pourront seules faire triompher la raison de la folie; donc donner à la nation entière des garanties de sécurité et de bien-être ».

En France, il faudra attendre le 21 avril 1944, presqu'un siècle après l'instauration du suffrage universel masculin, pour que les femmes acquièrent le droit de vote et soient reconnues par le général de Gaulle « électrices et éligibles dans les mêmes conditions que les hommes ».

Ce livre, réimprimé en fac-similé par Hachette-BnF, est identique à la publication originale de 1908 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France.
