Jahrhunderts. In Vilnius, im leuchtenden „Jerusalem des Nordens“, wurde Chaim Grade geboren, und von dort und aus der Enge der kleinen Dorfer in den 1920er-Jahren erzahlt er – ohne alle sentimentale Verklarung. Seine sinnlich-atmospharischen Darstellungen der vergangenen jiddischen Welt im Kleinen spiegeln große Dramen. Die kultivierte Rebezzin Perele, die das Erbe ihres gelehrten Vaters, des beruhmten Staripoler Rabbis, weitertragen will, ist eine der eindrucksvollsten der vielen Frauengestalten in Grades Erzahlungen: eine raffinierte judische Mamma-Xanthippe. Sie, eine Tochter aus rabbinischem Adel, will ihren Mann, den Uri-Zwi Konigsberg, vom schlichten Prediger zum angesehenen Rabbi befordern – mit demutigender Intrige, mit kalter Raffinesse und stummer Unerbittlichkeit. Hinter allen Fragen des Glaubensstreits aber verbirgt sich ihr Lebensgeheimnis. Ob hier, in der Erzahlung Die Rebbezin, oder in Leibe-Lejsers Hof: Der in Synagogen, Wohnungen oder Geschaften erbittert ausgetragene Streit um die religiosen Gebote, der „Religionskrieg“ zwischen Traditionalisten und Erneuerern, orthodoxen Eiferern und zionistischen Freidenkern bestimmt die Existenz aller und ist das große Thema von Chaim Grades Romankunst. Die lebendige Atmosphare genauso wie das alltagliche Leben dieses versunkenen Universums scheinen noch einmal auf. Auf Leibe-Lejsers Hof in Wilna sind sie alle vereint: Arbeiter und Handwerker, die hier mit ihren Familien wohnen, Fuhrleute, Metzger oder Markthandler. Zu den Feiertagen wogt eine Menschenmenge in Festtagskleidung durch den Ort und im Bethaus treffen sich die ganz und die weniger Frommen. Gefangen in ihrer Welt der Vorschriften und Gesetze, an denen mitunter auch die eigenen Frauen irre werden, leben auf Leibe-Lejsers Hof der fanatisch glaubige Schlosser Hiskia mit seinen drei Tochtern, der Gartner Schklar oder der Polsterer Moischele, dessen Frau Nachama den Scheidebrief nicht annehmen will. Familiendramen, Skandale, Schmerz und Scham – es braucht die Auslegung der Gesetze zwischen Mensch und Gott. Es braucht den imposanten Rabbi Joel Weintraub mit seiner Frau, der Rebbezin, die sich wieder in die weltlichen Dinge einmischen. Chaim Grade weiß viel: Zwischen „man muss“ und „man darf nicht“ gibt es noch etwas anderes – schlichte Menschlichkeit. Von ihr erzahlt er mit großer Einfuhlung in seine Figuren.
