About the Book

English summary: The Nile was the main artery of Ancient Egyptian culture and the main trade and transport route for the entire country. Similarly, the prosperity of the Minoan culture (3100-1330 BC), the oldest European civilization with its impressive temple buildings, was founded on a seafaring tradition. Thanks to its central island location, Crete remained in close commercial contact with surrounding Mediterranean cultures. Several centuries later, from the 8th to the 6th century BC, the Greeks, thanks to their shipbuilding technology, succeeded in establishing colonies and thereby considerably extended their influence in the Mediterranean. The ship designs were technically very advanced. Greek vases depict early vessels in simplified form and detailed Egyptian reliefs feature ships' structures or depict trading scenes at sea. Based on these representations and referring to ancient written sources such as Herodotus, Michael Bormann has been studying the reconstruction of ancient ships for many years and builds detailed models using a meticulous approach. His reconstructions form the core of this exhibition and the basis for the individual subject categories.
