About the Book

The most difficult task the board of a tax-exempt, public benefit corporation will ever face is finding and keeping a great general manager or chief executive officer. This book organizes the search, evaluation and support of that person in easy to follow steps. But what really sets this book apart from every other nonprofit management book is the index of industry best practices in charity administration. The authors have more than 70 years of combined experience in not-for-profit leadership and know that mastery of the details of administration are the difference between organizations that soar like eagles and the ones that sink like stones. From meeting management, through; staff supervision, fund raising, program evaluation, marketing, strategic planning and board development, this book provides real world tested vocabulary and principles that every general manager needs to know (and every volunteer board member needs to know that their CEO's understands). Finally, no secrets and no surprises in CEO hiring and evaluation because of shared concepts in excellence in administration.
About the Author: Terry J. Fries grew up in a fund raising family. His father George, one of the pioneers of the "Jerry Lewis Telethon", taught Terry how to integrate special events with major gifts and corporate partnerships. Terry has held executive staff positions with the American Heart Association, Easter Seal Society and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In 1983 he became an independent consultant and executive coach to not-for-profit CEO's and in that capacity has worked directly with more than 60 different organizations from New York to Hawaii. Terry has written three books in the field, teaches not-for-profit management at Mendocino College and speaks and trains regularly on the topic of leadership development and effective governance. Dr. Kay Todd began her career in not-for-profit management as a program coordinator for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. She joined the staff of the American Lung Association in 1985 as asthma education and air quality program director in their Eastern Oklahoma affiliate. She became Executive Director of that affiliate in 1987, Oklahoma Lung Association State Director in 1994 and one of only two internal consultants and executive coaches for the National American Lung Association in 2005. She received her PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2004. Kay is currently an adjunct professor at University of Oklahoma and the Executive Director of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation, in Austin Texas.
