Este primer tomo de las Obras Selectas de Paul Ricoeur, Lo voluntario y lo involuntario, publicado en 1950, constituye a su vez el primer tomo donde se anuncia e inicia su trilogía magna de la Filosofía de la voluntad. Dos proyectos se cruzan y hasta se enfrentan. El primero permite hacerse una primera idea de la pasividad que contradice la pretensión del cogito de origen cartesiano de presentarse como soberano de sí mismo. El segundo lleva tan lejos como es posible la descripción pura, a la manera de la intuición eidética de Husserl, de las estructuras del querer: proyecto, imputación, motivación, deseo, esfuerzo, emoción, hábito. El primer proyecto exige el complemento de una meditación sobre la "desproporción" de uno consigo mismo, que define el estatuto ontológico de "El hombre falible". El segundo encuentra su límite en la necesidad de poner entre paréntesis la condición de una voluntad desde siempre mala. Este paréntesis será levantado en "La simbólica del mal" que representa el pasaje de una fenomenología pura a una hermenéutica.Paul Ricoeur Valence (Charente), 27 de febrero de 1913 - Châtenay-Malabry, 20 de mayo de 2005) fue un filósofo y antropólogo francés conocido por su intento de combinar la descripción fenomenológica con la interpretación hermenéutica.Los primeros años de Ricoeur estuvieron marcados por dos hechos principales. El primero fue que nació en una devota familia protestante, convirtiéndose así en miembro de una minoría religiosa en la católica Francia. El segundo, que su padre murió en 1915 en la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando Ricoeur tenía solamente dos años de edad. Como consecuencia, fue educado por su tía en Rennes con una pequeña pensión asignada por su condición de huérfano de guerra. Ricoeur era un muchacho intelectualmente precoz y amante de los libros, cuya inclinación hacia el estudio fue incentivada por el énfasis de su familia protestante en el estudio de la Biblia. En 1933 Ricoeur se licenció por la Universidad de Rennes y en 1934 comenzó sus estudios de filosofía en la Sorbona, donde fue influido por Gabriel Marcel.
