La Prima Petri aborde de facon originale la thematique du faire la volonte de Dieu en lui associant celle de faire le bien . Cette association constitue un veritable motif theologique. Apres une importante enquete lexicographique, concernant le terme thelema (volonte) refere a Dieu, et le verbe agathopoiein (faire le bien), l'auteur parcourt l'Ancien Testament hebreu et grec, la litterature juive ancienne, specialement les textes de Qumryn, la litterature greco-romaine, et les autres ecrits du Nouveau Testament, en quete des sources litteraires d'une association thematique qui joue un role majeur dans l'argumentation parenetique de l'epOEtre. D'un point de vue strictement litteraire, elle unifie le discours parenetique, aidant les auditeurs a en memoriser le message par sa triple repetition aux moments cles de l'exhortation; elle permet surtout de preparer l'auditoire, en marquant les etapes d'une progression de la parenese: apres avoir demande, en reponse aux calomnies, de toujours faire le bien, l'auteur de l'epOEtre mentionne l'eventualite de la souffrance resultant de cette maniere de se comporter; enfin, il encourage ceux qui souffrent parce qu'ils font le bien a s'en remettre avec confiance a Dieu, Createur fidele. Parmi de tres nombreuses references scripturaires qui fondent la parenese petrinienne, deux occupent une place privilegiee: le Ps 33LXX et le quatrieme chant du Serviteur (Is 53). Elles apportent la confirmation que faire le bien correspond a la volonte de Dieu. Apres une etude detaillee du motif au sein de l'epOEtre, il apparait que la Prima Petri se situe a l'interface de deux cultures la culture biblique et juive d'une part, et la culture greco-romaine, notamment stoicienne, d'autre part. Dans sa conclusion, l'auteur ecrit: Le chretien accomplit la volonte de Dieu dans son existence en pratiquant non pas d'abord tous les preceptes de la Loi, mais le commandement de la charite qui, pour l'auteur, se resume a toujours faire du bien a autrui. C'est cette attitude fondamentale qui correspond a la volonte de Dieu, meme si le prochain vous calomnie ou vous fait du mal et meme si vous devez en souffrir. Faire la volonte de Dieu consiste donc a faire le bien, non par obeissance a ce que Dieu demanderait, mais parce que cela correspond a sa propre maniere d'agir et a celle du Christ dans sa Passion. La force du motif petrinien est d'etre adapte a une parenese chretienne qui est destinee a des communautes habituees au metissage culturel: elle est centree sur le comportement du Christ, tout en etant enracinee tant dans l'Ecriture et le judaisme que dans le stoicisme ambiant.
