About the Book

1st Place Winner in Chanticleer Book Reviews 2015 Cygnus Award for Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction!

2016 New England Book Show Winner

First, a series of natural disasters devastated the land. Then came the famine. Soon, fear and panic spread throughout the United States. And out of the rubble of a broken nation, rose an empire. That is how Vitruvia was born. Vitruvia, established during the regime of a heartless emperor and governed by an arrogant ruling class. Here society has regressed to repressive Victorian standards. Women have slowly lost their rights and those who rebel are severely punished. Bishops and lords impose their will on the segregated regions, but no one pays much heed to the Nits - rundown areas often unofficially policed by bribed criminals and inhabited by the poor, the desperate, and the dregs of society. Lorelei Fetherston is a daughter of the aristocracy. Inherently rebellious, eighteen-year-old Lore is torn between accepting her impending role as a dutiful wife or escaping to the bordering nation of Hopespoke to seek the truth behind her grandmother's secret legacy. There everyone is free and, according to legend, an enigmatic woman runs an underground squadron of girls and wields much influence. There Lore could pursue her writing without fear of punishment. But this isn't her only dilemma. Following graduation, she is to wed to her childhood friend, Gideon, but her heart is with their mutual best friend, Fallon, the current emperor's ward and heir to the throne. Then one fateful night everything changes. Her free-spirited friend, Sawyer, is in grave danger and Lore is forced to make a critical decision. From mysterious woodland strangers to underground clubs to spectacular fètes and a clandestine rebellion, Lore's life is about to change forever...that is, if she can survive.

About the Author: L.S. Kilroy is an irreverent sort of person who likes to write about things. Growing up an asthmatic only child in a neighborhood of geriatrics, she made friends with books at a young age, both out of necessity and genuine enjoyment. Early exposure to the classics fueled her own writing. She began making up stories and would stay up until all hours feverishly writing summaries and illustrating book jackets for ideas as they came to her. These she kept in an old Snoopy and Woodstock suitcase under her bed. At age fifteen a man in a bookstore asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "Writer," without hesitation. Writer is a title that has driven her both personally and professionally. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Merrimack College and a Master of Arts degree in Writing, Literature and Publishing from Emerson College. As a communications professional, she's been a writer, editor, and educator in the corporate, nonprofit, and public education sectors. In her personal work, she's eclectic and enjoys writing in many forms from short stories and novels to film treatments. L.S. Kilroy lives near Boston with her significant other, his son, and two feisty cats. When she is not copywriting by day or spinning stories by night, she loves being creative in the kitchen, belting out show tunes, traveling, entertaining friends, reading, and scouting out vintage finds at consignment shops. Her next novel, The Clothes That Make You, is a coming-of-age story set in 1967 New England suburbia about a shy misfit dealing with the loss of her father who makes an unlikely friend in the new girl at school - a feisty civil rights activist who identifies as a boy.
