A 4 de Abril de 1931 eclodiu a Revolta da Madeira, liderada pelo General Sousa Dias, que pretendia derrubar a Ditadura vigente em Portugal desde 28 de Maio de 1926 e o retorno do nosso país a um sistema democrático e constitucional. Esta insurreição militar contou então com uma forte adesão da população madeirense, a braços com uma crise sem precedentes, que a apoiou desde a primeira hora. Por diversos motivos esta revolta não conseguiu os seus intentos mas obrigou o General Carmona a enviar para a Madeira um forte contingente militar, composto por forças de terra, mar e ar, para a debelar. Caía assim por terra o ideal da Liberdade, que norteava os revoltosos, e com o fim do sonho Portugal viveria durante várias décadas sob o jugo da Ditadura, até ao despontar do 25 de Abril. Ao assinalar-se a efeméride do 85.° aniversário do início da Revolta da Madeira lançamos este novo estudo, que apresenta uma visão inédita desta sublevação militar, vista pelo prisma do conceituado The New York Times e do Diário de Notícias de New Bedford, complementada com profusa documentação da época, que nos faculta uma nova leitura dos eventos de 1931, através do cruzamento dos testemunhos de alguns dos principais intervenientes nestes acontecimentos que marcaram a história regional e nacional.
About the Author: Duarte Mendonça é natural do Funchal, onde nasceu a 21 de Julho de 1974. Em 1995 cumpriu o Serviço Militar Obrigatório na Escola Práctica de Infantaria, em Mafra, tendo frequentado o Curso de Sargentos. Passou à disponibilidade em 1996 com a patente de 2.° Furriel. De volta ao Funchal formou-se na Universidade da Madeira, com a licenciatura em Línguas e Literaturas Modernas, variante de Francês/Inglês, em 2000, e o Mestrado em Cultura e Literatura Anglo-Americanas, em 2003. Tem publicadas seis obras, a saber: João de Lemos Gomes (1906-1996) - Médico Cirurgião(Funchal 500 Anos); Da Madeira a New Bedford - Um Capítulo Ignorado da Emigração Portuguesa nos Estados Unidos da América(DRAC, 2007); Impressões de uma Viagem à América - Pe. Alfredo Vieira de Freitas(CMSC, 2009); Memórias da Minha Vida - Um Inverno na Madeira(Sopa de Letras/Principia Editora, 2011); Carlos e Zita de Habsburgo - Crónica de um Exílio Imperial na Cidade do Funchal(CMF, 2013); e American Views on Madeira Wine - Annotated Anthology of 19th century texts(Edição de Autor, 2015). É funcionário da autarquia funchalense desde 2008, desempenhando funções na Biblioteca Municipal do Funchal.
