Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: In den letzten Jahren hat sich der Wettbewerb in Industrien wie der Automobilzulieferindustrie drastisch verschärft. Im Zuge der Globalisierung der Märkte, also der Ausdehnung des Teilezukaufs auf die internationalen Beschaffungsmärkte, hat sich auch die Konkurrenz heimischer Zulieferer erweitert. Osteuropäische und asiatische Billiglohnländer schaffen mit ihren Angeboten einen starken Preisdruck. Zusätzlich stellt die Strategie des Single Sourcing die Zulieferer vor neue Anforderungen, da die meisten Hersteller langfristig bemüht sind, die Zahl ihrer Direktzulieferer stark einzuschränken. Die gelieferten Produkte müssen dadurch immer stärker Systemcharakter besitzen und weisen somit auch eine höhere Komplexität auf. Die zunehmende Produktvielfalt der Hersteller verringert andererseits die Stückzahlen der einzelnen Modelle und erhöht hiermit den relativen Entwicklungsaufwand pro Modell. Dieser Trend wird durch die Verkürzung der Produktlebenszyklen weiter verstärkt. Unternehmen, die im Zuliefermarkt wettbewerbsfähig bleiben wollen, müssen daher über breites Know-how verfügen und in der Lage sein, kostengünstig zu produzieren. Sie müssen flexibel auf die Anforderungen des Kunden reagieren und in kurzer Zeit Produkte mit hoher Qualität entwickeln können. Kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) fällt es zunehmend schwerer, diesen Anforderungen gerecht zu werden. Weder verfügen sie über das breite Know-how, das heute von einem Lieferanten umfangreicher Systeme erwartet wird, noch stehen ihnen die Finanzmittel zur Verfügung, um dem Kunden rund um die Welt zu folgen bzw. dort zu fertigen, wo die Produktionskosten niedrig sind.
