  • Tout commence en 1866: la peur règne sur les océans. Plusieurs navires prétendent avoir rencontré un monstre effrayant. Et quand certains rentrent gravement avariés après avoir heurté la créature, la rumeur devient certitude.
  • L'Abraham Lincoln, frégate américaine, se met en chasse pour débarrasser les mers de ce terrible danger. Elle emporte notamment le professeur Aronnax, fameux ichthyologue du Muséum de Paris, son domestique, le dévoué Conseil, et le Canadien Ned Land, roi des harponneurs. Après six mois de recherches infructueuses, le 5 novembre 1867, on repère ce que l'on croit être un cachalot, narwal gigantesque. Mais sa vitesse rend le monstre insaisissable et lorsqu'enfin on réussit à l'approcher pour le harponner, il aborde violemment le vaisseau et le laisse désemparé. Aronnax, Conseil et Ned Land trouvent refuge sur le dos du narwal. Ils s'aperçoivent alors qu'il s'agit d'un navire sous-marin...
  • Ils font alors connaissance du capitaine Nemo, qui refuse de leur rendre la liberté.
  • Alors que Ned et Conseil ne cherchent qu'à s'évader, Aronnax éprouve une certaine curiosité pour Nemo, cet homme qui a fui le monde de la surface et la société. Le capitaine consent à révéler au savant les secrets des mers. Il lui fait découvrir le fonctionnement de son sous-marin, le Nautilus, et décide d'entreprendre un tour du monde des profondeurs. Nos héros découvrent des trésors engloutis, l'Atlantide et des épaves d'anciens navires, s'aventurent sur les îles du Pacifique et la banquise du pôle Sud, chassent dans les forêts sous-marines et combattent des calmars géants. Aronnax finit par découvrir que Nemo utilise le Nautilus comme une machine de guerre, un instrument de vengeance contre les navires appartenant à une nation maudite à laquelle il voue une terrible haine.
  • Aronnax, Ned et Conseil parviennent à s'échapper. Ils s'embarquent à bord d'une chaloupe et accosteront sur une des îles Lofoten.
  • Ils ne sauront jamais ce qu'est devenu le Nautilus, peut-être englouti.
LE CAPITAINE NEMO
  1. Personnage emblématique du roman, le capitaine Nemo est un homme froid, distant, très intelligent (il était autrefois ingénieur de profession), qui déteste le genre humain pour des raisons qui lui sont propres, détaillées dans le roman.
  2. D'après lui, le bonheur procuré par la vie est présent uniquement dans la mer qui recèle nourriture, énergie et multiples merveilles aquatiques sous-marines.
  3. Pour échapper à la vie sur terre, rongée par la haine et les vices de l'homme, il décide, avec bon nombre de ses amis ingénieurs, de mettre au point le sous-marin Nautilus, véritable merveille technologique, dont il est nommé capitaine...
