About the Book

The Vikings at Helgeland is a play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, first published in 1858. The play is set in the Viking Age and tells the story of two rival clans, the Hjrungavgs and the Gudmunds, who are in a constant state of war. The Hjrungavgs are led by the ruthless and ambitious Sigurd and his wife, Dagny, while the Gudmunds are led by the more peaceful and honorable Thorolf. The play opens with a feast at the home of the Hjrungavgs, where Sigurd and Dagny are plotting to overthrow Thorolf and take control of his lands. They enlist the help of a young warrior named Hirdis, who is in love with Sigurd, to seduce Thorolf and lure him into a trap. The plan succeeds, and Thorolf is killed in battle. However, Hirdis is consumed with guilt and confesses her part in the plot to Thorolf's brother, Gudmund. Gudmund seeks revenge and leads his clan in a final battle against the Hjrungavgs. The Pretenders is a play written by Ibsen in 1864, set in Norway in the 12th century. The play centers around two pretenders to the throne, Duke Skule and Earl Birkebeiner, who are vying for power after the death of King Hkon Sverresson. The play explores themes of ambition, power, and loyalty as the two men struggle to gain the support of the people and the nobility.Throughout the play, Skule and Birkebeiner engage in political maneuvering and military campaigns to gain the upper hand. However, their rivalry becomes more personal as they both fall in love with the same woman, Inga of Varteig. In the end, Skule is defeated and killed, and Birkebeiner becomes the new king of Norway.Overall, these two plays by Ibsen explore themes of power, ambition, and betrayal in the context of historical events. The Vikings at Helgeland and The Pretenders are both considered to be important works in Norwegian literature and are still performed today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
