About the Book

Prior to Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005), a few of the men & women who lived in or near and worked in or near the French Quarter of New Orleans called themselves 'Locals'. Amazingly those Locals, averaging in age from 18 to 46, stayed to salvage what they could and to protect what was theirs or what belonged to their comrades from looters. They stood tall and rebuilt their livelihoods. They quickly realized that the rebuilding had to happen as quickly as possible and the reinstatement of tourism was tantamount. Also, they hoped to keep the drug lords (who were among those that fled) out of their town. The vignettes herein include those people from around the country who dropped everything to come and help immediately after Katrina subsided; especially those who decided to stay permanently in or near the amazing one-of-a-kind French Quarter. They too came to proudly call themselves Locals and the pre-Katrina Locals readily embraced them. This novel will only touch the tip of the iceberg with regards to a small cross-section of people who helped the French Quarter survive Katrina. There are dozens of other such stories that took place in each of New Orleans' neighborhoods that will not be covered. The novel involves some crime; however, it focuses on relationships & unique traditions.Needless to say, this novel is meant to tell the story of some very stalwart living-life folks....more so than to relate Katrina's aftermath. (Refer to Joe Zang's novel entitled French Quarter Witchery for detailed insight on this trying time in New Orleans.) As the Author, my first visit to New Orleans was in the mid 1960's and then once more as a conventioneer in the 1990's. But then in early 2000, a couple of months after I semi-retired (after 33-years of high technology electronic engineering) I joined some friends for the last full week of Mardi Gras Carnival in the French Quarter. In the past 13-years since that first Mardi Gras, I have only missed the last week of that wonderful tradition twice. By 2005, the French Quarter inspired me to become a writer. Most of my novel use the 'Quarter' as a venue. Just after Katrina, in 2006 many of the Locals of the French Quarter befriended me. Soon, I came to know more Locals than friends who still attended Mardi Gras Carnivals. Lately, I have also taken in the Super Bowl and Halloween in the 'Quarter'; causing my writing ideas to increase three-fold! That's when it dawned on me just how unique & stalwart those folks in the 'Quarter' were & are. They support one another through good & bad times. They work very hard; they play just as vigorously. It is these living-life-large (yet sincere) folks that passionately carry on those unequaled monthly traditions that take place mostly in NOLA's French Quarter and nowhere else in the world.Because this Novel is devoted to them and their French Quarter, this book may seem to be more of a factual Travel Book. If that works for you; so be it! I just know that I had a great time putting this Novel together. If you have not visited New Orleans yet, please know that each month of the year something fabulous is scheduled to happen!
