Excerpt from Vier Beiträge zur Geschichte der Baukunst Frankreichs

Handgemenge unter den pueri Beider: adfuit autem Dei ultio de prasenti super eos, qui beatum atrium humano sanguine polluerunt. Ueber ein anderes Bauglied im östlichen Teil der Basilika erfahren wir weiter durch die Tituli, die Sulpicius Severus für die Gemälde an den Wänden derselben dichtete. Sie erwähnen einen Turm. Item a parte orientis in turri lautet die Ortsangabe für einen der selben. Ein salutatorium, also eine Art Sakristei nennt Gregor hist. VII, 22 zweimal als Annex der Kirche. Von Bedeutung für die Gestalt derselben ist ferner auch die Erzählung Gregors von einem Diebstahl in der Basilika, bei dem die Täter durch eine (oder die} fenestra absida: einsteigen (hist. VI, to). Hinzuzunehmen sind noch einige Nachrichten über Wiederherstellungen des Baues in späterer Zeit. So deckt Bischof Eufronius nach einem Brande bald nach 560 denselben mit Zinn ein (hist. Franc. X, 31 u. IV, Ueber seine eigene restaurierende Tätigkeit notiert Gregor von Tours hist. Franc. X, 31: basilica sanctae parietes adustos incendio repperi, quos in illo nitore vel pingi vel exornari, ut prius fuerant, artificum nostrorum 0pere imperavi. Baptisterium ad ipsam basi licam aedificare praecepi, in quo sancti Johannis cum Sergii mar tyris reliquias posui, et in illo priore baptisterio sancti Benigni martyris pignora collocavi. Hier erfahren wir also, da� zu der Perpetuusanlage höchstwahrscheinlich noch ein Baptisterium ge hörte.

Diese Nachrichten insgesamt geben für die Rekonstruktion des Perpetuusbaues folgendes an die Hand (vgl. Fig. I). Derselbe hatte eine Länge von 160 Fu� m, eine Breite von 60 Fu� m, eine Höhe von 45 Fu� m. Was die aus führlichere Disposition der Chorpartie anlangt, so deuten die von Gregor für das altarium angegebene Zahl der Säulen, sowie eine Er wähnung eines Atriums an der Apsis darauf hin, da� diese nicht aus einem einfachen Halbrund bestand, sondern einen Umgang mit Säulenstellung besa�. Dies lenkt weiter darauf hin, Gregors Erwäh nung von singula loca atrii venerandi (hist. VII, unter denen zu nächst Altäre in tektonischer Art der Aufstellung verstanden werden könnten, auf nischen oder apsidiolenartige Erweiterungen des Um ganges zu beziehen, deren Annahme im Hinblick auf die Minerva Medica und Nola gerechtfertigt erscheint. Hierbei darf nicht au�er Betracht bleiben, da� die Beschreibung der Felixbasilika an letzt genanntem Orte von Paulinus an Sulpicius Severus gerichtet ist, mit dem der Nolaner Bischof auch über ein Bildnis des hl. Martingelegentlich in Korrespondenz stand'. Damit wäre, indes, was Gregor für die Rekonstruktion des Altarraumes der Martinsbasilika bietet, nicht erschöpft. Die von ihm angegebene Zahl der Säulen wäre kaum in der Apsis selbst mit Vorchor allein unterzubringen, auch wenn mit Quicherat und Ratel Doppelsäulemtellung nach Art von S' Costanza bei Rom anzunehmen wäre. Sie lä�t auf die Vermutung kommen, da� das Querhaus ebenfalls eine Dreiteilung besa�. Das Stvlitesdenkmal im kalat-sernan, auch die Darstellung einer Chorpartie auf einem der Kuppelmosaike in A. Georgios zu Salonik'- lassen ebenso, wie die Bildung der sakralen Anlagen bei Karnak (bretagne) derartige Anordnungen begründet erscheinen. Wir hätten dann für den Perpetuusbau in den Grundzügen eine verwandte Querhausforma tion, wie sie die spätern Ausgestaltungen der Martinshasilika aufzeigen.
