The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, containing a Faithful Account of the Fortunes, Misfortunes, Uprisings, Downfallings and Complete Career of the Nickleby Family (Vie et aventures de Nicholas Nickleby, contenant le fidèle compte-rendu des bonnes et mauvaises fortunes, des succès et des échecs, et la carrière complète de la famille Nickleby), communément appelé Nicholas Nickleby, est le troisième grand roman de Charles Dickens, publié en feuilleton de 1838 à 1839 avec des illustrations de Hablot Knight Browne (dit Phiz), puis en un volume. Mark Ford le décrit comme le prototype du roman dickensien, Pickwick Papers et Oliver Twist étant si totalement sui generis qu'ils en sont devenus uniques . L'intrigue est centrée sur le personnage de Nicholas, jeune homme laissé impécunieux par la mort de son père et devant subvenir aux besoins de sa mère et de sa soeur. Son caractère droit et indépendant suscite l'antipathie de son oncle Ralph Nickleby qui le juge à tort sans valeur et le poursuit de son inimitié. Dans son sillage, se distinguent sa jeune soeur Kate et sa mère, l'inénarrable Mrs Nickleby. Commencé de concert avec Oliver Twist, le livre a connu un succès immédiat, en partie dû aux descriptions de l'école du Yorkshire que dirige l'épouvantable Wackford Squeers, où Nicholas est engagé comme répétiteur (usher); réplique de Bowes Academy à Greta Bridge, que Dickens a lui-même visitée sous une fausse identité en compagnie de son illustrateur et ami Hablot K. Browne lors de la préparation du roman. L'horreur des scènes décrites et le pathos qui en émane rappellent l'hospice où Oliver Twist languit sous la férule du bedeau Mr Bumble durant son enfance.
