Churchill était un animal de combat indomptable, ou un têtu et entêté qui voulait toujours imposer sa propre volonté, ou il savait passer de cheval en cheval en pleine effervescence afin d'être toujours vainqueur, ou un homme politique qui dès sa jeunesse n'a cru qu'à la poussière par balle . Winston Churchill, quel que soit le jugement que l'on veut porter, selon qu'on le regarde sous un angle ou sous un autre, c'était incontestablement un homme hors du commun.
Au-delà des capacités politiques et militaires, sur lesquelles la postérité continuera longtemps à se disputer, a vécu sa vie de protagoniste de son temps suspendu à quelques forces (e que certains voyaient aussi comme ses faiblesses). C'était d'un égocentrisme que l'on ne retrouvait dans l'Europe de l'époque que chez Hitler, Staline et Mussolini. Doté d'un sens profond de l'imagination et de l'esthétique, il a pensé et créé chacun de ses propres gestes en clé
Amateur d'attitudes farfelues, de quoi n'enfiler qu'un seul survêtement pour une réception diplomatique et rendre visite à des soldats en première ligne, dans le désert, avec une jolie ombrelle blanche, même dans les gestes les plus banals, cherchait la touche qu'il pouvait lui apporter l'attention des autres: la façon de les faire monter au ciel les tourbillons de fumée de son cigare, la façon dont il faisait des gestes pendant Jim Benson
discours ou conversations, l'élégance grandiloquente de certaines interventions oratoires ou de certaines de ses pages, même le geste de ses doigts en forme de V, qui avait un sens clair provocateur pour l'ennemi.
Un critique malicieux écrivait que Churchill aurait pu être un merveilleux metteur en scène pour un grand spectacle de music-hall . Un homme qui avait certainement besoin de démontrer à lui-même et aux autres qu'il est différent, qu'il est sans aucun doute le meilleur et donc digne de l'état-major de commandement.
Habitués aux biographies édifiantes, nous ne pouvons ni ne voulons porter de jugements pour ou contre son comportement en tant qu'homme-chef de l'Empire britannique dans les dernières années de sa force mais même au seuil de son coucher de soleil.
On peut dire qu'au mérite d'avoir revigoré et renforcé l'esprit anglais contre la menace nazie en Europe, coexiste le démérite de ne pas avoir perçu dans toute sa gravité le danger allemand au début des années 30, avec le mérite d'avoir réussi pour convaincre les États-Unis de rejoindre l'Europe dans la guerre contre les puissances de l'Axe, le démérite d'avoir défendu avec acharnement la mentalité coloniale de l'Angleterre.
