Il s'agit d'un des livres les plus celebres de la litterature grecque moderne. Publie a Mytilene en 1924, reedite a Athenes en 1930 et remanie plusieurs fois par l'auteur jusqu'en 1956, La Vie dans la tombe a ete traduit dans une dizaine de pays, dont la France (1933). Cette premiere version francaise, intitulee De Profundis, etablie d'apres l'une des premieres editions grecques et amputee de plusieurs chapitres ne rendant pas compte de cette oeuvre majeure, une nouvelle version, fidele au dernier etat du texte, s'imposait. La vie dans la tombe est, dans la liturgie orthodoxe, l'hymne du Vendredi saint, deploration funebre dans l'attente de la Resurrection. Pour Myrivilis, c'est l'Enfer des tranchees durant la Grande Guerre, au-dela meme de son experience personnelle. Le livre se presente comme le journal intime d'un jeune Grec de Mytilene (Lesbos), Antonis Cotsoulas, engage volontaire sur le Front d'Orient dans la Division de l'Archipel (les iles liberees du joug turc a l'issue des Guerres balkaniques). Il retrace ses epreuves et son evolution interieure, de l'elan juvenile initial a la desillusion d'un patriotisme lucide teinte d'antimilitarisme, entre son depart de Lesbos en 1917 et sa mort au cours d'une grande offensive alliee contre les positions germano-bulgares de Macedoine, aux environs de Monastir. Bien que le lieu ne soit pas expressement nomme, cet episode final peut etre identifie avec la seconde bataille du Skra di Legen (mai 1918), victoire remportee par les Allies au prix d'un lourd tribut grec (pres de 3 000 tues ou blesses) et prelude a la percee qui allait determiner le renversement du rapport des forces. Si l'auteur, pour menager sa liberte d'expression, recourt aux artifices de la fiction, il n'emploie jamais le mot roman . Son livre est avant tout un temoignage d'un realisme extreme sur la vie quotidienne dans les tranchees. Les 55 tableaux qui jalonnent ce chemin de croix forment une unite narrative autonome, a la progression dramatique rigoureuse. On y trouve tous les ingredients des classiques recits de guerre, marches harassantes, corvees quotidiennes mais aussi scenes d'horreur et d'apocalypse. On y croise tous les desservants de cet abattoir international en folie (Celine), grades arrogants ou humbles heros, deserteurs ou victimes resignees dont la vie intime est devoilee sans complaisance. Ce Monde d'En Bas a pour contrepoint reve le Paradis Perdu de Mytilene, avec sa lumiere, les parfums de sa flore, ses couleurs et ses rivages. Impregne de traditions ancestrales, Myrivilis fait alterner le realisme le plus cru avec le lyrisme le plus delicat. Le ton de l'epopee ne lui est pas non plus etranger. Il fait sentir avec eloquence le dechainement des forces guerrieres. Au service de son oeuvre il forge une langue neuve, un demotique proche de la langue orale, ponctue de regionalismes expressifs, de creations verbales pures qui, par son sens du rythme, s'eleve a la hauteur d'une prose d'art. Cet irrecusable document est aussi un manifeste litteraire.
