Rééditer un ouvrage vieux de deux siècles est une entreprise risquée, mais étonnamment fascinante. S'il s'agit de la biographie d'une des plus illustres figures de son temps, cela peut devenir un vrai défi. Mais si par extraordinaire l'Histoire, par un de ces tours dont elle a le secret, a permis que malgré sa puissance, malgré sa réputation, malgré la richesse acquise de son vivant, le sujet devienne, dans le tourbillon du temps, oublié du plus grand nombre, l'entreprise prend soudain une dimension qui dépasse le simple travail de réédition.
Redonner à lire et à connaître la biographie d'Ali Pacha deux cents ans après sa mort est de ces travaux qui nous semblait indispensable, compte tenu de l'aura qui fut la sienne en son temps.

Si le personnage nous était connu de longue date, c'est un voyage en Épire grecque, à l'automne 2017, et notamment la visite de son fief de Janina (aujourd'hui Ioannina), qui nous permit véritablement d'approfondir les détails de sa vie. Une vie qui inspira tant les diplomates et gouvernants qui croisèrent sa route, que les écrivains qui trouvèrent, dans les péripéties aventureuses qui furent les siennes et qu'il se plaisait lui-mème à mythifier, matière à ouvrir plus grandes encore les portes d'un Orientalisme naissant. À l'heure où Chateaubriand parcourait les terres de Grèce avant de poursuivre vers la Palestine et l'Égypte, il était déjà pacha des terres de cette mystérieuse contrée des confins de la Roumélie ottomane.

D'autres, croyant échapper à la mousqueterie, se réfugièrent dans un appartement du khan; mais les Grecs y mirent le feu, et les malheureux réfugiés périrent dans les flammes. Quelques-uns, enfin, s'étant fait jour à travers les balles, viennent se jeter aux pieds d'Ali, en implorant sa pitié; mais toujours impitoyable, il ordonne à ses Chiaoux et à ses Kaïvasis de les tailler en pièces à coups de sabre. Pas un seul de ces malheureux ne fut épargné. Les cadavres, au nombre de près de sept cents, furent laissés sans sépulture dans l'enceinte mème du khan: on en mura la porte, et on y plaça une inscription portant ces mots: ainsi périssent tous les ennemis de la maison d'Ali !
About the Author: Alphonse de Beauchamp, né à Monaco, est un historien français du XVIIIe siècle. Il est au service de la Sardaigne quand la Révolution française éclate, et subit une détention de plusieurs mois pour avoir refusé de combattre la France. Venu à Paris, il travaille dans les bureaux du comité de sûreté générale puis au ministère de la police. Destitué par Fouché à qui déplut son Histoire de Vendée (1806), on lui doit de nombreux autres ouvrages relatifs à l'histoire récente de son époque, notamment une Histoire du Brésil, depuis sa conquète en 1500, jusqu'en 1810.
